Barend Myburgh is 1/5th scale World Champion
Eighteen year old Barend Myburgh has won the 1/5th scale World Championships, held in South Africa, as a result of an impressive meeting long performance, winning all his qualifying heats and thus taking pole position for the one hour final. Jumping straight into the lead and being never headed, Myburg won by almost 14 laps from Rodney Michael with Simon Bradley a further four laps away in third position. Whilst Myburg dictated the terms of the race throughout, Michael drove determinedly from fifth on the grid to earn second the hard way – battling Bradley and Andries Oosthuizen (fourth) for a podium spot for much of the race. Despite at one stage having to pit to replace a failed battery, Michael’s consistency and reliability eventually was rewarded as both Bradley and Oosthuizen suffered mechanical problems in the second half of the race. Willem Hendrick Barnard was fifth, followed in by Willem Vorster and 15 year old Jean Pierre Oosthuizen. Disappointingly this major international race attracted only 7 drivers, all South African.

This happens if the ‘heads’ decide something NOBODY wants to do lol. But on the other hand … how many bombs, terrorists or kidnapings have we had? … Stupid fear …

I expect a similar turnout for the 10th off road worlds …….
So SA may well get 2 more world champs!
This situation is not IFMARS fault in that they have been caught out by the political and financial situation.
However with the track worlds supposedly at the same place next year they have to act quickly to prevent a farce at one of the sports premier events

Is this a joke? I remember when L. Collari would run 1/5. This seems like a bad choice for IFMAR to run a race with no representation of other nations and racers. I do not know whats up with IFMAR, first they start changing and allowing bodies that look nothing like real cars, and now they hold races even when not all other competitors are present?????

For sure a Worlds with 7 drivers is a joke, just like the Electric Off-Road Worlds will be.
However, the blame for this can be placed firmly on the manufacturers and drivers. Blaming security reasons is just BS by uneducated people.
I would’ve expected nothing more from the Americans, who usually have no idea, but the lack of European and Asian drivers is worrying to say the least.

To call this race a world championship is a joke. I am sorry Barend, but the IFMAR shouldn’t award the title when nobody else is coming. Very poor…

“I would’ve expected nothing more from the Americans, who usually have no idea, but the lack of European and Asian drivers is worrying to say the least.”
Way to stereotype. The fact that South Africa isn’t the safest place on the planet seems to be a lame excuse for the North Americans not to go, but I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest that they’re ignorant.

The blame is squally at the feet of the organisers namely IFMAR and SARDA and I suppose even the host venue TRAP. There has been no advertising, marketing of the event or even the slightest attempt to allay security and safety fears. A friend of mine is the deputy MP for Tourism SA and their department had no clue of this event. This is simply a disgusting example of organisers that should be burned at the stake and not be involved in RC at all and simply proves that there is not serious intentions at development and promotion. Maybe its time that new bodies take over and the old fossils and not representative bodies like SARDA in SA be dissolved.

Unbelievable how rude some of these comments are. Come to South Africa first before you criticise this amazing country and its people. South Africa has hosted many international and World championships, eg cricket, rugby…. and its been awesome……and we are hosting the Soccer World Cup in 2010!!!!!
Looks like nothing but a sad excuse! Look in your own backyards first before you criticise this country and our people.
AAAND all the people at IFMAR and TRAP did a sterling job!!!
Thanks for nothing!
