Grainger takes Rd1 of BTCC

The 2010 Schumacher BTCC championship got underway over the weekend with round one at the Mendip circuit, the race was seen as a major warm up for the forthcoming BRCA national meeting which takes place at the Somerset track in a few weeks time. Nearly all the big names in modified were in attendance including national champion Chris Grainger and ex BTCC champions Olly Jefferies and Elliott Harper. It was Chris Grainger that showed he still had the pace from last year and set FTD in modified ahead of Elliott Harper. In Pro Stock it was Xray driver Ricky Copsey that led the A final grid ahead of Adam Meakin and Matt Quinlisk. This years BTCC has a 13.5 stock class and it was Jake Williams who took the top spot for the A final in this class.

The first leg of the A main saw a win for Chris Grainger ahead of Elliott Harper and Olly Jefferies while in pro Stock Ricky Copsey lost out to Lee Price who took leg one in the pro Stock class. A great last leg in modified saw Olly Jefferies hunt down the Mi4 of Chris Grainger, the pair battled it out over the final few laps with the reigning national champion having to fend off a determined challenge from the Associated driver, Chris hung on to take the win ahead of Olly, this gave the pair the top two places on the podium with John Pape completing the top three.

In pro stock Ricky Copsey made up for his poor first final by taking the win in leg two, but it was a case of too much too late as Matt Quinlisk took the overall win from Mark Hancock and Sam Clifton. A consistant Jamie Carpenter took the 13.5 stock win ahead of Matt Sedgley and Kris Kennedy. The next round of the BTCC takes place at the Cotswolds track in Gloucestershire in a few weeks time.
