Thomas Günsel wins German South Regional Rd1
The first round of the German South Regional 1/10th 200mm Championship in 2011 took place last weekend at the fast and technical track of the MBC Bamberg. Few weeks after his move to Capricorn/Race-Center-Munzig it was the first race for Thomas Günsel with his Capricorn powered LAB-C01. In the opening practice on Saturday morning he showed a really good pace and was really close to the current track record. After five rounds of qualifying he was the only driver to manage 25 laps in 7.14 min to end up in front of Patrick Nähr and current European B Vice Champion Dirk Stammler.
Following the new DMC rules every driver had to make his way through the lower finals. Again it was Thomas who won his semi final with two laps in front of Dirk Stammler and Steve Baumgarten. After a clean start from TQ in the main final the two front runners pulled away from the rest of the field. Until the first fuel stop it was a really close battle for the lead as Thomas got in trouble two times because of some backmarkers after pulling away from Dirk. In the middle of the race both drivers ran out of fuel once but managed to come back to the front of the field. With 4 minutes to go Thomas was 5 seconds ahead of Dirk. 2 minutes before the end Dirk had to do an extra fuel stop because of a different fuel strategy. So Thomas took the win with his LAB-E01 powered LAB-C01 in the first race for Capricorn in front of Serpent drivers Dirk Stammler and Steve Baumgarten.
