BRCA Truggy and E8 nationals Rd5 – Report

Deerdale situated in the heart of the country near Mansfield played host for round 5 of the BRCA Truggy and E8 Buggy championship. The track is reckoned by some to be the best 1/8th scale astro-turf track in the country. It is big, but can catch one out with its technical sections. Normal format resumed with the drivers brief and qualifying starting at 9 o’clock. E8 buggies were first, followed by the truggies. Although the attendance was low the weather turned up for the enjoyable days racing. Some of the top buggy drivers and truggy drivers found out first hand in there first run how the track can bite back at you if you don’t respect it.

Round one for the electric buggies saw David Crompton in pole position closely followed by Craig Drescher and Ben Cosgrove. Local driver to the track John Holmes then put the fastest time in on qualifying round two. This meant, due to constant run times that the end of round three with the best two to count Craig Drescher was in pole position followed John Holmes and David Crompton.

Jon stayed in the grove all day and kept his impressive driving going which made him top dog in all three qualifying runs. Jack Embling who is chasing Jon for the championship started to get to grips with the track by his second and third run. The third place spot was shared between different drivers throughout the day.

Due to the numbers in the E8 class the drivers asked, at the drivers brief, and all agreed that they would all run together in the A Final. This resulted in 16 cars starting off with 3×10 minute races with the best two to count. This lead to some very good racing. Round one and John Holmes was showing the pack around the sunny track with Terry Atkinson having technical issues bringing up the rear. Leg two of the finals and Craig Drescher lead the way competing 14 laps in 615.82. In leg three he improved this to 14/607.68. The final results with the best two to count saw Craig winning in front of John and Richard who completed the podium.

The 18 minute truggy B final started with eight cars of which the top 4 would be rewarded with a bump up into the 30 minute A final. This was achieved by the following Robert Cockcroft, Keith Bellamy, Kayleigh Blackwood and Geoffrey Blackwood. So the A final was tense at the start as the end of the championship is getting closer. All 14 cars started off on their 30 minute race. The flag dropped and Jon Howells left the line in and puff of smoke. This was the last time that the rest of the pack seen of him as he was off with Jack chasing him down. Both drivers complete their demonstration race completing 40 laps in 1801.86 and 1825.63 respectively. The top 3 places did not change from their qualifying runs.
