Völker & Cola take wins at HotRace Cup

Völker & Cola take wins at HotRace Cup

The HotRace Cup for 1/10th electric touring cars took place in Rome this past weekend at the beautiful Axa track, located halfway between the ancient city centre and the beach. With the best Italian drivers and some illustrious foreign additions such as Alexander Hagberg, Marc Rheinard, Eric Dankel, Lucas Urbain and the newly crowned 4-time back-to-back ETS champion Ronald Völker everything was set for a hot race. Despite the event being run for the first time the race promised to be very interesting and entertaining, and so it was.

After a nice fight for the TQ spot on a track where it was crucial to start ahead of the pack, Hagberg’s strategy paid off, with the Xray driver eventually edging Ronald Völker, with the Italian pair of Menicucci and Brunelli right behind them. Rheinard would finish qualifying in 6th, with Dankel’s Awesomatix lining up in the grid right behind his Tamiya, and Urbain starting from 9th place.

The Modified class’ triple A-mains proved to be extremely intense, with the drivers offering a fantastic show on the tight and technical track. Leg 1 saw the victory of Yokomo’s ace Ronald Völker, who would try and find a way past the pole-sitter Hagberg for the whole 5 minutes, eventually managing an amazing pass in a hairpin with three laps to go. Macchioni finished 3rd after a contact between Rheinard and Menicucci caused the pair to lose a good amount of time.

In the second A-main the fight for the lead was even closer, with a train of five cars being within 1 second for the first three minutes of the race. Despite the fair play shown by all drivers, racing so close caused a very light contact between Menicucci and Völker that led to a tucked body for the German who then decided to pull out. With Hagberg being slightly slower than Menicucci and Brunelli, Alex would let them pass during the following lap and so it was an Italian show in the front, with Menicucci taking the win by 6/10th of a second from Brunelli.

Coming to the third and deciding A-main, a very clean start opened a fight that lasted from the beginning to the end between Hagberg and Völker, the latter knowing he could do with a second place as he won what would have been for sure the fastest leg on new tires. Hagberg claimed the win and the second place overall, with Volker winning the race in the tie-breaker, and Menicucci coming in 3rd to complete the podium.
