2015 Surf City Classic – Report
The 2015 Surf City Classic was held this past weekend at OC R/C Raceway in Huntington Beach, California. With the reputation of having one of the best tracks and facilities in the country, this year’s event once again sold out very quickly. The race schedule saw open practice on Friday, three round of qualifying on Saturday and a final round of qualifying followed by the main events, including a single 10-minute A-main, on Sunday. In the 2WD Modified Buggy class, Ryan Maifield would take the TQ honors and Maifield would go onto lead every lap and take the win in the A-main over Ryan Cavalieri by 4 seconds. Kody Numedahl would make a great comeback to finish on the podium in third.
2WD Modified Buggy top 3:
1. Ryan Maifield – Team Orion/Team Orion/Team Orion
2. Ryan Cavalieri – Team Orion/Team Orion/Team Orion
3. Kody Numedahl – Reedy/Reedy/Reedy
In the 4WD Modified Buggy class, it was also Ryan Maifield that would go onto take the overall TQ. Ryan Cavalieri would go onto dominate the 10-minute A-main and take the win by over 15 seconds ahead of second place finisher Spencer Rivkin. Rob Gillespie would better his starting position to round out the podium in third.
4WD Modified Buggy top 3:
1. Ryan Cavalieri – Team Orion/Team Orion/Team Orion
2. Spencer Rivkin – Reedy/Reedy/Reedy
3. Rob Gillespie – Reedy/Reedy/Reedy
In the Modified Truck class, Dakotah Phend would dominate qualifying to take the overall TQ. Dakotah then got a great hole-shot from his pole position and went on to lead every lap to take the win in the 10 minute A-main. Finishing only 4 seconds behind Phend was Frank Root who put in a great run to finish second overall. Brent Thielke put in a solid performance to finish third overall.

2. Frank Root – Team Orion/Team Orion/Team Orion
3. Brent Thielke – Reedy/Reedy/Reedy
In the 2WD Modified Short Course class, it was all Ryan Cavalieri in qualifying who took the overall TQ. Cavalieri then lead the race from tone to tone to take the win by almost a full lap in the 10-minute A-main. Finishing second overall was Kody Numedahl from team mate Kyle Layton.
2WD Modified Short Course top 3:
1. Ryan Cavalieri – Team Orion/Team Orion/Team Orion
2. Kody Numedahl – Reedy/Reedy/Reedy
3. Kyle Layton – -/-/-
In the 4×4 Modified Short Course class, it was Jake Thayer taking the TQ honours. Jake went onto lay it down during the 10-minute A-main event to take the win by 11 seconds over his team mate Frank Root. Finishing third overall would be Ryan Dunford.
