Boronia Spring Bash – Report
This past weekend was the debut of the Boronia Spring Bash in Melbourne, Australia. The event was conceived only recently to cater for popular alternative racing classes. The weather was definitely summer hot but rain and a late thunderstorm changed plans for the practice and qualifying days. However Sunday was only sunshine and heat for the finals. In the VTA class, Brian Stewart (Race Opt) eventually claimed the TQ but made costly early mistakes in A1 and A2 to the benefit of Scott Rawlings (Yokomo) with Brett Marshall (Awesomatix) in third.
The Tamiya TT-01 truck class is globally entertaining and this event was no exception. Scott Rawlings took the triple with TQ, 1st and concourse ahead of Dave Wilson and late starter Dean Genardini.
This is the first Australian event for the Tamiya M07 mini chassis and was very popular as always. Only lightly optioned versions of the chassis were eventually settled on by Tony Parreiro to take TQ and win ahead of Tim Keiller. Declan McQuay was consistent but slightly off the pace with his proven M05 chassis.
Mini 4WD has been very popular again lately and Todd George (Atomik) put on a great display to take TQ and first ahead of talented driver and fabricator, Paul Sims (Tamiya). Duane Voss (Hobbyking) claimed third tier on the podium.
Formula was very entertaining with several drivers displaying great pace at times but it was this time Scott Rawlings (Yokomo) who would TQ ahead of Brian Stewart (Roche). Both drivers put on a great show which resulted in an A3 decider. Stewart contested several times earlier in the final race but Rawlings found a small margin. The deficit was regained by Stewart and made a successful pass on the last lap to claim the win by only 0.286s. Duane Voss claimed another well earned third place after qualifying sixth.
The SERCCC introduced the GT control class locally a few years ago and the racing highlighted why it has remained popular. Paul Sims (Team Associated) TQ’d and won despite the best efforts of Richie Domingo (VBC Racing). Third place went to Sebastián Manshanden (Xray)
