Rafiq takes win at KL Grand Prix GP Challenge Cup

The 2018 KL Grand Prix GP Challenge Cup was held in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia took place with the racing seeing massive weather changes. Late on Saturday rain was falling heavily, however the Sunday turned out hot and sunny. In the 1/8th class the first round of qualification saw Yee Kok Leong TQ-ing the round while Amirul Rafiq topped Yee Kok Leong’s time by a margin of only a second in round 2. So it all came down to the last round of qualifying, where Yee Kok Leong tried to seek redemption and pushed hard for the pole position but in the end it didn’t work out. Meanwhile, Amirul Rafiq was able to find more time to take the overall TQ with Yee Kok Leong 2nd and Anthony Wee in 3rd.

The 60-minute A-main saw a clean start on Sunday afternoon as Amirul Rafiq and Austin Wong, coming from P7, lead the pack. After an intense battle between those two for the first 20 minutes, Amirul Rafiq slowly opened a gap and even after a stop for tyres he was still in the lead. Behind him the battle for 2nd was on between Yee Kok Leong, who didn’t had the best of starts, and Austin Wong went until approximately twelve minutes before the end of the race. Rafiq was hit by a backmarker which caused his rear tower pin to came loose. Driving like that for around five minutes, he finally pitted to fit in a new pin which causes him to loose a lap but he still won the race in front of KK Lim and Billy Cheah.
