4WD gets underway at World Championships

4WD gets underway at World Championships

With drivers having had a day off to recover from their 2WD exploits it is back to business this morning at the Yatabe Arena as the 4WD World Championships got underway with the first round of practice. With the astro turf track undergoing two changes from that used in 2WD it was Xray’s touring car ace Bruno Coelho who found the best early footing in the high traction conditions as he lay down the early pace over 3-laps. For defending champion Steven Hartson it was not the start the Associated driver was looking for with the American set to change car for the second practice.

Dreams do come true – Rivkin is World Champion

Dreams do come true - Rivkin is World Champion

His team-manager Brent Theilke has been using the hashtag #dreamsdocometrue to highlight the progress of his young driver’s first World Championship and the use of wording couldn’t have turned out to be more true with Spencer Rikvin your new 1:10 2WD World Champion. The 16-year-old claimed the sport’s greatest accolade by backing up his A2 win with an even more impressive drive to victory in A3.  Going up for the title against two of the sport’s biggest names, Jared Tebo and Ryan Cavalieri, what was special about the performance in Japan was how the new star of offroad dealt with the pressure of the occasion like water off a duck’s back.  Behind Rivkin, outgoing champion Tebo would claim second overall with Cavalieri completing the podium at the Yatabe Arena.

Rivkin’s talent shines through to win A2

Rivkin's talent shines through to win A2

World Championship debutant Spencer Rivkin’s raw talent shown through in A2 of the 1:10 Offroad Worlds at the Yatabe Arena with the Associated driver take a very popular win.  Starting from third on the grid the 16-year-old had taken the lead by lap 2, putting a great pass on Top Qualifier Jared Tebo, and lead through to the finish ahead of Associated team-mates Ryan Cavalieri and Neil Cragg.  Winning by over 2-seconds, Rivkin’s win puts him in a 3-way all American shoot out for the 16th IFMAR 2WD World title with Cavalieri and A1 winner Tebo who would finish the second encounter 4th.

Tebo wins A1

Tebo wins A1

Jared Tebo has won the opening A-Main at the 1:10 2WD Offroad World Championships in Japan.  The Top Qualifier would end up taking a comfortable win surviving a mistake and a challenge from star of the event Spencer Rivkin.  The young Associated driver found himself twice locking wheels with his team-mates first with Neil Cragg early on, ending the former Champions challenge, and later with Ryan Cavalieri.  Despite the contact Cavalieri would see off the challenge of Ryan Maifield to complete the Top 3 behind Tebo and Rivkin.  Starting from 2nd Cragg would finish 6th.

Tebo to defend World title as Top Qualifier

Tebo to defend World title as Top Qualifier

Jared Tebo will defend his 2WD Offroad World title from the front of the grid after a dramatic finish in the final round of qualifying at the Yatabe Arena.  Going into the fifth qualifier only Tebo and Neil Cragg were left in contention for the overall TQ and with both making mistakes it looked like star of the event Spencer Rivkin would post his first TQ run.  Such a result would have led to a double celebration at Team Associated as it would mean 2005 champion Cragg with take the overall TQ due to previous results.  It was not to be however as Rivkin would have issues passing Naoto Matsukura with the resulting rollover enough to allow a recovering Tebo snatch the round and a second consecutive overall World’s TQ.  Lining up behind the Kyosho driver will be a trio of Associateds with 2011 Top Qualifier Cragg 2nd, Rivkin an very impressive 3rd and Ryan Cavalieri fourth.  Interestingly for an event that created a lot debate when it was announced it would be run on astro turf, with home advantage one of the big arguments against the artificial surface, no Japanese driver has made the final, most notably Naoto Matsukura, with the 10 car line up a split of five from offroad racing powerhouse nation American and five Europeans.

Cragg & Tebo to go head to head for Worlds TQ

Cragg & Tebo to go head to head for Worlds TQ

Neil Cragg and Jared Tebo will go head to head in the final round of qualifying tomorrow morning for the honour of being Top Qualifier at the 1:10 2WD World Championships in Japan.  A second TQ run from Cragg in the fourth round of qualifying, when he headed an Associated 1-2 from star of the event Spencer Rivkin, sets up the dual between the former Champion and Tebo. The defending champion also took two TQ rounds from the day but a bad second & fourth qualifier means Tebo sits 3rd overnight behind Rivkin.

Tebo sees off Cragg challenge in Q3

Tebo sees off Cragg challenge in Q3

Jared Tebo has posted his second TQ run of the IFMAR World Championships but Q2 pace setter Neil Cragg made the reigning champion work hard for it, a late roll over by the former champion allowing the American top the 3rd & fastest qualifier so far by 1.2 seconds.  Behind them Cavalieri would post his first Top 3 time with the 2011 Champion becoming only the 3rd driver to run 18-lap of the Yatabe Arena circuit.
