On the Grapevine – Huntington Beach

Grapevine

Last Monday morning I kind of broke one of own unwritten rules by wearing a t-shirt of an RC brand. I have also been very aware of brand association having had to deal with it during my time doing PR/Sponsorship work in 1:1 Motorsport. I probably first came across this when dealing with Colin McRae for a rally event I was involved in organising. Although Colin’s preferred method of transport was flying his own helicopter, when he arrived at the race course he had to land in a designation landing area and for the short drive to the pit area because he was rallying for Ford that short trip had to be taken in a Ford. Similarly when I chauffeured around World Touring Car ace Gabriele Tarquini, who came to Ireland to launch a Young Racing Driver Award, it had to be done in an Alfa Romeo for whom he was racing at the time. As a result of these and similar dealings, I have always been conscious about brand association and because of my work more so about remaining neutral. So while travelling to/from events we cover I make sure my clothing doesn’t represent any particular brand. While very grateful for the r/c t-shirts that do come my way I restrict myself to wearing them when I am enjoying some down time at home.

Dominant Hagberg wins ETS Round 2

Dominant Hagberg wins ETS Round 2

Alexander Hagberg has claimed a dominant victory at Round 2 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Germany, the Team Xray driver wrapping up the Muelheim-Kaerlich event by backing his A1 performance by again cruising to an easy win in A2. His second ever ETS success, the first being Poznan in 2011, Hagberg’s win ends both defending champion Ronald Volker and Yokomo’s domination of carpet races for the past two seasons.  It was an ultra successful weekend for Xray with their drivers Marek Cerny and Jan Ratheisky also wrapping up the overall Pro Stock and Formula honours in the second round of A-Mains.

Hagberg cruises to A1 victory

Hagberg cruises to A1 victory

Alexander Hagberg cruised to a very convincing victory in the opening A-Main at Round 2 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series this morning in Germany.  Starting from the TQ position having dominated qualifying, the Team Xray driver raced unchallenged to take the win over Ronald Volker and Viktor Wilck despite almost not completing his final lap. Thinking his race was finished but having just crossed the line 1/10th of a second before the 5-minutes was complete he pulled up just in front of race control where team-mate & Pro Stock A1 winner Marek Cerny was about to pick up the car.  Already celebrating his win, he was informed he had still to finish but being the only driver to do 23-laps even with the loss of 8-seconds official register the win with a finishing time.

Hagberg claims first TQ honours in ETS

Hagberg claims first TQ honours in ETS

Alexander Hagberg has claimed both his and Xray’s first ever overall TQ of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series’ premiere class. Dominating proceedings at the second round of the championship, the Swede put in yet another impressive run in the penultimate qualifier at the German event as he again topped the times from defending champion Ronald Volker.  While Hagberg kept his joy of securing pole position for tomorrow’s Ride Modified A-Main under wraps, leading one onlooker to come up the rather catchy title of ‘Ice’berg’ for the Swede, there was plenty of reason for celebration among the Xray team as it would prove to be an all Xray affair.  With a record 362 entries in Muelheim-Kaerlich, the Slovakian manufacturer’s cars will start all three classes from the No.1 spot on the grid.  Defending Pro Stock Champion Marek Cerny completed a hat trick of TQ runs to put his T4 2014 on pole for the ETS’ biggest class while Jan Ratheisky secured the overall TQ in Formula with an Xray prototype.

Hagberg again in Q2

Hagberg again in Q2

Alexander Hagberg continued were he left off yesterday in Germany by getting Day 2 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series underway with another impressive TQ run.  Dominating yesterday’s proceedings topping practice & the opening qualifier, this morning the Team Xray driver set the pace in Q2 by a massive 4-seconds. Closest to the Swede was defending Champion Ronald Volker, who benefited from a late mistake by team-mate Yannic Prumper, with Awesomatix’ Freddy Sudhoff again completing the Top 3.

Day 1 belongs to Hagberg

Day 1 belongs to Hagberg

Day 1 of the second round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series belonged to Alexander Hagberg, the Team Xray driver backing up his practice pace with a very convincing TQ run in the opening round of qualifying at the German event. With even Marc Rheinard complimenting the Swede’s performance calling it ‘impressive’, Hagberg’s closest challenger was Yokomo’s Yannic Prumper who was some 1.8 seconds adrift.  While Freddy Sudhoff completed the Top 3, it was a tough start to qualifying for defending Champion Ronald Volker as the Round 1 dominator managed only the 8th fastest time.

Hagberg top seed for qualifying

Hagberg top seed for qualifying

Alexander Hagberg will lead away the top heat in qualifying this evening at Round 2 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series after the Xray driver was fastest in timed practice at the Muelheim-Kaerlich event. Having set the pace in the first timed practice over defending Champion Ronald Volker, the Swede was able to improve his 3-consecutive fastest laps by .085 of a second in the final practice while his closest rivals failed to better their early times. Hagberg becomes the first driver to top Volker this season, the Yokomo driver having completely dominated the season opener in the Czech Republic, a result albeit only practice will be a big boost for the former race winner who had a disappointing 2012/13 season of ETS.

Exclusive – Atsushi Hara confirmed at SWorkz

With lots of speculation over his future since announcing his departure from HB/HPI last August we again talked exclusively with Atsushi Hara and can confirm ahead of its official announcement that he has signed for Speedmaster, parent brand of SWorkz. Having tested many brands of car and talked with numerous companies he finally decided on the Taiwanese company as he feels they offer him the best opportunities for his future going forward, not just for racing. One of the factors influencing the deal was the connection with A-Main Hobbies, a personal sponsor of his but with some big developments in the pipeline between the Taiwanese brand and the US online power house we can expect to see the brand receive a bigger push in the US and Worldwide. In terms of the car, he says that while it needs some work to get the performance up to scratch, the quality is top notch and going forward he will have an updated car for this year’s Worlds in Italy. In our interview Hara also confirmed that he will race for Yokomo in the remaining ETS rounds as well as the TITC and the World Championships in Florida in what is a per race contract.
