JConcepts NCTS Rd2 – Report

This past weekend Northwest Hobbies in Albany, Oregon played host to round 2 of the 2019 JConcepts National Carpet and Turf Series also known as the Northwest Carpet Nationals. The 2019 NW Carpet Nationals layout was very challenging. The track flow was super fast and required a lot of low-speed steering as the angles and turns were really tight, but yet needed balance because of the full length straight and high-speed sweeper that required confident steering and stability. Getting the car setup right was the key to lap speed, but keep in mind the faster you go the harder it is to maintain consistency which led into an internal battle of pushing too hard and going too slow. In 2WD Modified Buggy it was a flawless performance by one of the industry’s brightest young stars as Team Associated’s Broc Champlin scored his 1st major victory on carpet at round 2 of the NCTS. After round 1, Broc was searching for a bit of redemption and with a dominant win in A1 and A2 here at round 2 in 2WD Modified, Broc is starting to emerge as a true competitor on the world scale. Team Yokomo’s Ryan Cavalieri finished 2nd, but is starting to gel better with his new gear and inching closer to his winning ways. AE’s Dustin Evans finally got his car to his liking on main day and found great speed and finished 3rd on the podium.

The classes remained the same for 2019 with Formula using the Scorpion speed and motor combination, Stock 13.5 uses the proven Muchmore combo and the new Fun 17.5 class utilises a spec motor provided by T2M. The Modified class remained unchanged and all classes use the popular Volante tyres. The premier Touring Modified class has been Olivier Bultynck’s playing field for over ten years, claiming national title after national title. Despite carpet not being his favourite racing surface, he shattered Florian Joos’ previous lap record during Saturday’s practice. The runner up champion of the previous four years, Mitchell Van Es, just came back into racing after a long illness. He too was very strong during Saturday’s practice with his Awesomatix car. Having raced on the same layout three weeks ago, Florian Joos already found a good setup for his car and was hoping to finish on the podium.
