fri_daio-770x462

Dario Balestri and Bruno Coelho have claimed the first round of qualifying at the Euro Nitro Series season opener in Italy.  The reigning 1:8 Champion, Balestri topped the times from Robert Pietsch while in 1:10 Coelho was fastest over the 4-minutes from the touring car class’ reigning champion Jilles Groskamp.  Having started out the day with their drivers topping the times in both classes, Serpent wouldn’t be able to maintain their position, driver errors the prblem for Merlin Depta in 1:8 and both Alessio Mazzeo & Dominic Greiner in the 1:10 encounter.  Mark Green would at least see Serpent in the Top 3 of 1:10 while in 1:8, World Champion Simon Kurzbuch was third fastest.

Kurzbuch wins but Balestri claims ENS title

Kurzbuch wins but Balestri claims ENS title

Simon Kurzbuch won the fourth & final round of the Euro Nitro Series, but second behind the Shepherd driver in Italy was enough for Capricorn’s Dario Balestri to deny the season’s only double winner from retaining the title he won last year at the Mini Autodromo Jody Scheckter track. Starting second behind Top Qualifier Balestri, Kurzbuch would drive the ‘near perfect race’ coming out on top of a thrilling mid race battle between the two world class 1:8 drivers.  Knowing even if Kurzbuch took the win Balestri would see out the 45-minute final in a controlled fashion finishing 5-seconds behind his Main title rival while the other title contender Robert Pietsch finished a distant 5th after an early incident with last year’s race winner Lamberto Collari.  Starting from 12th on the grid having bumped up from the B-Main Alberto Picco would completed the race podium in Fiorano.

Groskamp & HB claim ENS title

Groskamp & HB claim ENS title

Jilles Groskamp and HB are the new Euro Nitro Series Champions after a thrilling final at the concluding round in Fiorano, Italy.  With four drivers in contention for the title, Groskamp starting behind his rivals after a tough qualifying, the Dutch racer drove a near perfect strategy only being denied his first win of the season on the penultimate lap by Alessio Mazzeo.  Still with his rivals having issues,  the fourth 2nd place finish of the four round ENS gave him the title with team-mate Teemu Leino making it a championship 1-2 for HB.  The title marks the first major success for the Japanese company’s R10.  Having been the dominant force in qualifying unfortunately for Serpent’s Dominic Greiner the chance to complete the perfect weekend would be taken out of his control, a conrod failure while leading the Main & on target for the title ending his race.
