EFRA Large Scale Off-road Euros – Report

This past week three European Championships were up for grabs in Austria in the Large Scale 1/6th 4WD, 2WD and Short Course classes. The 4WD final produced 30 minutes of the highest quality racing, with never more than a couple of seconds between the leaders and the lead changing on multiple occasions. Pekko Iivonen led from the pole but was soon in a monumental scrap with reigning European champions Dario Veseli of Croatia and TQ man Sven Rodenwald from Germany. With all three teammates in the MCD equipe, there was a desire from all three to keep the racing as fair as possible. The first turning point cam at about half way when a couple of mistakes dropped Sven out of contention, leaving Pekko and Dario to dice for the win. With fastest laps being traded and the lead regularly swopping the second key element of the final became apparent as one of Iivonen’s front tyres begun to become unglued. Now just missing the ultimate pace the Finnish youngster could not stay with Veseli who claimed his third successive 4WD European title.

David Ronnefalk crowned 2018 2WD European Champion

The 2018 EFRA 1/10th Electric Buggy European Championship are held in Reims, France this week. On the FFVRC club’s slippery clay indoor track the 2WD portion of the event saw a great qualifying battle between Team Associated’s Joona Haatanen and Schumacher’s Michal Orlowski who would be trading TQs each of the first four qualifying rounds until Yokomo’s Lee Martin made himself only the third TQ driver with a win in round 5. However it was still Haatanen with the overall from Orlowski 2nd. Lee would grab the 3 spot on the grid thanks to his TQ, promoting HB Racing’s David Ronnefalk, who looked to be fast all week, into 4th on the grid.

Kurzbuch & Mazza crowned 2018 IC Track Euro Champs

The 2018 EFRA European 1/8th IC Track Championships were held at the Cassino track in Italy last week. After a few days of free practice for all, Thursday saw two rounds of seeding practice, with a drivers best three consecutive laps to count. At the conclusion of seeding practice the top 64 drivers would go on to contest the European 1/8 IC A championships, while the remaining 29 drivers would do battle for the Euro B title. In the Euro A category, Simon Kurzbuch laid down an early marker, taking round one by 5/100ths from Dario Balestri and Teemu Leino, before Balestri hit back to take round two from Robert Pietsch and Kurzbuch in the last of Thursday’s qualifying action. The cooler track temperature on Friday morning meant round three could be critical, as it was likely to produce the fastest run time, which could prove critical in a tie break situation later on. Kurzbuch took the round by 7/10ths from Balestri, with Pietsch coming home third. Balestri knew what he had to do to deny Kurzbuch the pole in round four, and duly delivered, beating him by the largest gap so far of 1.3 seconds, with the ever-reliable Pietsch in third.

Hagberg & Orlowski complete podium at ETS season finale

Alexander Hagberg and Michal Orlowski completed the podium at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series season finale this afternoon in Slovakia.  While Bruno Coelho wrapped up the overall win in A2, the ETS Champion opted to run the third A-Main at Hudy Arena after not being 100% happy with his car in A1 & 2 and again he lead home another stagnated Top 3.  Winning by his biggest margin of the three encounters, Coelho would finish 1.8-seconds up on Hagberg with the result securing Xray another 1-2 finish at their home track.  For Hagberg, today’s 2nd place would also help him to move ahead of Yokomo’s Ronald Volker in the final end of season standings to finish 3rd overall behind Marc Rheinard, the Infinity driver having another difficult weekend.  Finishing A3 over 2-seconds back on Hagberg, Orlowski would cap off an impressive weekend by securing his first ever ETS podium.  Having started his career in the ETS but moved over and becoming a star and champion of the Euro Offroad Series, today’s result should see the Schumacher driver return to his roots and become a contender for the title of both disciplines next season.

Feldmann & Stegmuller take EFRA Large scale titles

The Tourlaville club in Northern France hosted the EFRA On-road Large Scale European Championships last week. The championships would be decided in a Touring Car and the Formula class. In the Touring Car final the result was never in doubt as “Mighty” Markus Feldman took his 7th European title – but more significantly his first since 2010 with a lights to flag victory. Behind him the podium places were always in doubt as a battle royale between 2017 Euro Champ Bernard Arnaldi, up and coming star Patrick Folmann and 2016 Champ Giovanni Verbrugghe entertained the huge crowd for over half the 30 minutes of the final. In the end the Dane Folmann tangled with Arnaldi allowing Verbrugghe to slip past for 2nd. Folmann picked up 3rd when Arnaldi had to retire towards the end much to the disappointment of his fellow countrymen lining the track. This left a jubilant Feldmann to take the trophy, which he described as “Easy” thanks to “The fantastic set up and work from my mechanic”.

Bruno Coelho has capped off his title winning Yokomo Euro Touring Series campaign with a fourth win, the Xray driver wrapping up victory at the season finale at Hudy Arena with another tone to tone win in A2.  Top qualifier at the Xray team’s home event, Coelho led home team-mate Alexander Hagberg with Schumacher’s Michal Orlowski the only one able to run with the Xray pairing.  With the Top 3 finishing in the same order they started, the gaps between them evenly stretched out.  Behind it was Ronald Völker who was the top mover of the race taking fourth ahead of Yokomo team-mate Christopher Krapp at the finish from 6th on the grid.
