2016 Model Mountain Camp – Report

2016 Model Mountain Camp – Report

For the second year running the Model Mountain Camp event was held at Storefjell Hotell and Resort. A unique event for Norway the weekend sees both the Storefjell Sprint Touring race and a round of the “King of Nations” drift cup. This year the event had 114 entries from six countries including two foreign guests in the form of Yokomo’s development driver Matsuzaki Hayato and sales manager Aso Minoru. In the Spring Modified class Matsuzaki showed his world class skills and so he took an easy win with the fight being on for the remaining podium spots. Both Lars A. Andersen and André Roine really wanted those spots on the podium, but in the end it was Lars who took the runner-up spot behind Hayato. André, who had a serious crash in the second leg had to let his team mate Anders Mikkelsen by with the latter taking the final podium spot.

Bill Sydor wins Spec GT class at IIC 2016

Bill Sydor wins Spec GT class at IIC 2016

The recent International Indoor Championships in Las Vegas not only saw 1/12th scale and Touring Car racing but also the running of the popular Spec GT class. The category offered super close racing all week, thanks to having handout motor and speed control, as well as a FDR limit. In qualifying, Rod Canare would take the TQ spot, with Devin Patterson starting second and Bill Sydor starting third. In the main, a tap from Canare on the first lap would put him back in the pack, moving Patterson and Sydor to the top. Sydor would follow in Patterson’s shadow for a few laps, and on lap 8 Patterson made a small mistake on the curbing, allowing just enough space for Sydor to go through, giving him the lead which he would not relinquish.

Ronnefalk hits jackpot to become World Champion in Vegas

Ronnefalk hits jackpot to become World Champion in Vegas

David Ronnefalk is the new 1:8 Offroad World Champion, the Swede finally delivering on the promise he has shown ever since being crowned European B Champion in 2009.  Starting from 3rd on the grid, the HB Racing driver would win the 1-hour encounter in convincing style once he got passed pole sitter & defending champion Ty Tessmann, his HB Racing team-mate eventually finishing up third.  Making it a European 1-2 in the American’s own backyard, 2012 World champion Robert Batlle would take the runner-up spot recovering from some big early mistakes.  With Ronnefalk claiming the sport’s greatest prize, RC Tracks of Las Vegas would put the spotlight on his replacement as nitro offroad’s next star of the future as David Ongaro, despite his age, mixed it with the biggest names in RC with ease and confidence.  A back pressure pipe would deny him from finishing his first Worlds final as Vice Champion leaving the Italian 6th behind Ryan Cavalieri.  With many feeling the first running of a Worlds final under floodlights would favour the American drivers, it would be Top Qualifier Jared Tebo who would be the best US finisher taking fourth 2.2-seconds up on Cavalieri.
