1/8th onroad Worlds Manufacturer Statistics

IFMAR have released the official manufacturer statistics for this year’s 1:8 Onroad World Championship, the sport oldest and longest running category. In terms of equipment being used by the 97 racers taking part in the Japanese event it is the host nation that is the most popular choice in the four main categories of chassis, engine, tyres and fuel.

Sahashi again in Q2

As predicted the second of today’s qualifiers at the 1:8 Onroad World Championships in Japan proved to be the rocket round with Tadahiko Sahashi again fastest improving his Q1 topping pace by 11-seconds on the 16-seconds a lap track.  As in the opening round it was Mugen’s Takaaki Shimo who was closest to the Serpent driver, 5/10ths of his pace over the 10-minute qualifier.  After a bad start to qualifying, Q2 saw Jilles Groskamp bounce back to post the 3rd fastest time as the only foreign driver who appears to be a serious treat to the Japanese.

Tadahiko Sahashi tops first qualifier

Tadahiko Sahashi set the pace in the opening round of qualifying at the 1:8 Onroad World Championship in Japan, the Serpent driver one of only two drivers to complete 36 laps of the Keitune track. Producing a time of 10:14.886 the younger of the Sahashi brothers was 9/10ths of a second faster than his nearest rival Mugen’s Takaaki Shimo.  Missing out on a 36 lap run by just over a second, KM Racing’s Meen Vejrak completed the Top 3 for the round which saw practice pace setter Jilles Groskamp not finish.

Groskamp top seed for qualifying in Japan

Jilles Groskamp is the top seed for qualifying at the 1:8 Onroad World Championships, the Dutch ace again putting his Shepherd top of the time sheets in Japan in the second controlled practice.  Groskamp managed 3-laps in a time of 50.330 on the slower track his CP1 time some 8/10ths faster. Continuing to impress, Italy’s Raiola Carmine set the second fastest time in CP2, his Xray just 9/1000th off the European Championship pace.  Japanese National Champion Takaaki Shimo, the widely tipped event favourite, posted the third fastest time having struggled in CP1 with a lack of steering.

Groskamp fastest in first controlled practice

Team Shepherd’s Jilles Groskamp got Day 3 of the 1:8 Onroad World Championships off to a flying start as he set the pace in the first of the two rounds of controlled practice.  The Dutch ace did a best 3-consecutive lap time of 49.524 over the 10-minute run outpacing by 2/10th of a second Mugen’s Takehiro Terauchi (49.857) and Serpent ‘s Yuya Sahashi.  The first sunny morning at the Keitune Racing Speedway since drivers arrived for the event, the warmer opening conditions caught out many drivers most notably pre event favourite Takaaki Shimo who said afterwards he had ‘no steering’ leaving him to post the 7th fastest time.

Shimo tops final Day 2 practice in Japan

Mugen’s Takaaki Shimo topped the final round of free practice bringing Day 2 of the 1:8 Onroad World Championships in Japan to a close. The Pre Worlds race winner managed a time of 49.515 over 3-consecutive laps in the sixth of the day’s 8-minute practice runs followed closely by Serpent’s Tadahiko Sahashi (49.564) and KM Racing’s Keisuke Fukuda (49.803).  Overall the fastest time of the day (49.207) was set by Team Shepherd’s Jilles Groskamp in the second of the cooler morning runs while in the final practice the Top European was his team-mate Oliver Mack who posted the 4th fastest time.

Vejrak fastest in FP4

While Jilles Groskamp’s time set in the morning’s second practice remains the fastest time, it was KM Racing’s Meen Vejrak who topped Day 2’s fourth round of free practice at the 1:8 World Championships in Japan. The 200mm World Champion set the fastest 3-consecutive laps in a time of 49.687 with FP3 pace setter Tadahiko Sahashi (49.759) second fastest.  Posting identical times (49.897) Team Shepherd’s Oliver Mack and Mugen’s Takaahi Shimo posted the third fastest time followed by KM Racing’s Adrien Bertin.  Transponder problems meant Groskamp failed to register a time in both FP3 & 4 but the Dutch ace was still happy with his Shepherd and in particular in FP4 during which the sun finally broke cover over the Keitune Racing Speedway.

Groskamp sets early pace in Japan

Jilles Groskamp set the early pace on Day 2 of practice for the 1:8 Onroad World Championships in Chiba, Japan.  After two of six rounds which make up today’s schedule at the Keitune Racing Speedway, the Team Shepherd driver set the fastest three consecutive laps with a time of 49.207 followed closely by Serpent’s Yuya Sahashi (49.249) and the Mugen of Pre Worlds race winner Takaahi Shimo (49.286).  An event that marks the debut for HB in what many view as the Formula 1 category of R/C, Hideo Kitazawa took his R8 to the fourth fastest while Teemu Leino was the second fastest non-Japanese driver, the Finn posting the 6th fastest time ahead of 200mm World Champion Meen Vejrak.
