Paul Lemieux wins Mod at 2009 IIC

Paul Lemieux wins Mod at 2009 IIC

The 5th annual IIC was held last week at the Riviera Hotel and Casino located at the heart of the famous Las Vegas strip. Every year the event draws competition from many different countries and this year was no different with almost 350 entries spread across all the classes. Timed qualifiers started Thursday morning and in Mod Rubber TC it was Paul Lemieux with his Xray T2’009 who TQ’d the first and second rounds, his time from round two would be enough to hold the TQ position ahead of Juho Levanen and Ronald Volker. Another Xray driver Drew Ellis took the top qualifying spot in the 13.5 Foam class. In the Modified final, Paul got the holeshot with Juho close behind, while Andy Moore had a good start and was up to 3rd. A mistake by the leader saw him drop back to 3rd, but as the top 2 battled it out Paul would make his way back to the front and go on to cruise to the victory in front of 1/12th Word Champion Naoto Matsukura in 2nd and Andy Moore taking 3rd spot. In the 13.5 Foam class Drew Ellis could take the win from fellow Xray driver Eric Anderson in 2nd and Larry Fairtrace 3rd.

Hupo wins Mod as CRC dominate 1/12th at IIC

Hupo takes Mod as CRC dominate 1/12th at IIC

More news from last weeks IIC which in 1:12th scale modified, saw Austrian racer Hupo Honigl take his CRC Gen-XL to a convincing win in the A-final. Hupo absolutely ran away with the win setting fast lap and running a string of laps that no other competitor could match. In fact, Hupo’s average top 20 fast laps were faster than any other driver’s single fastest lap. In the 17.5 turn 1:12th scale class Brian Wynn took his new Gen-XL to a T.Q. by almost 1 full lap and backed it up with the win . In the main, while Brian drove away from the field, a good battle ensued for second, which in the end went to CRC Michigan Mafia driver Jody Flipse. In the 13.5 turn 1/12th A-main, it was again a CRC sweep with D’Agnolo, Wynn, Calandra and Hönigl finishing 1-2-3-4. With Hupo’s 4th place finish, he won the “non-Advanced” speed control division.

Keven Hébert wins 13.5 Rubber class at IIC

Keven Hébert wins 13.5 class at IIC

The 5th Annual International Indoor Championship (IIC), presented by Scotty Ernst, was hosted over the weekend at the Riviera in the heart of the Las Vegas strip. With 90 entries in the class, Team Associated/Reedy’s Keven Hébert took his TC5R to the top qualifying position and eventually the A-main victory in the ultra competitive 13.5 Rubber Touring Car category. Hébert was on a mission to add to his impressive career resume by setting the fastest time each time he was on the track. With challenges from former World Champion Andy Moore, multi-time Reedy Race & National Champion Barry Baker, the young Associated star stood up to the pressure and claimed the top qualifying position. As the tone sounded for the main event, Hébert jumped out to a lead that would never be challenged.  Waiting in the cat bird seat, Hohnstein took advantage of a tangle between Moore and Baker and jumped in to second position. Three minutes later, Hohnstein had Moore all over his back door and never cracked; even making a clean pass back on the World Champion after a wide corner. With Hébert on a victory lap, all Hohnstein had to do was drive around traffic to claim the runner up spot with Mike Haynes 3rd.
