Dutch electric on-road nationals Rd5 – Report

Dutch electric on-road nationals Rd5 – Report

The fast-flowing track of the MAC De Baanbrekers club in Rucphen was the venue to host the fifth round of the Dutch touring car stock nationals. Gaining enough points would mean the championship could be decided early in John Bruins’ favour with round 6 still to come late September. On Saturday most participants made the journey down South to get some practice before the event on Sunday, however the day would prove to be a complete wash out with only a few drivers been brave enough to go out in the rain. With the weather forecast for Sunday being overcast arriving at a dry track in the morning was a big relief to many drivers and the action got under way soon.

On the Grapevine – Beijing

On the Grapevine – Beijing

After an enjoyable break from the skies, last week I returned to my travels with a journey that from the time I left my house in Ireland till the time I arrived at my other 2nd home (Hotel!!) ended up taking 27-hours.  The reason for the long trip was because I was off to China where Red RC would cover its first FEMCA Championships.   The event essentially crowns the champions of the Far East much like EFRA’s championships decide who is Europe’s No.1 driver and the ROAR Nationals determine who is top dog in the US/Canada.  While FEMCA, which stands for Far East Model Car Association,  has hosted the championships for many years across most of its 15 member countries, the 2013 1:8 Offroad event marked a very significant development for our sport in that it was the first sanctioned international r/c car event to take place in China.  While pretty much every r/c car to hit a track around the world contains parts made in China, as a hobby r/c racing is almost non existent in a country that has a population of 1.4 billion people.  Over the course of the week long event I got a very interesting insight into how that could all be about to change as the powers that be see potential in using r/c racing for the purpose of making education more interesting and interactive – something that can only be a win win situation for the growth of racing in potentially the biggest market in the world.

Sandy Iavazzo wins SA electric on-road state title

Sandy Iavazzo wins SA electric on-road state title

The 2013 1/10 SA EP Onroad State Titles were held at Hobby Habit’s challenging indoor asphalt circuit in Adelaide, South Australia. Reedy factory driver Sandy Iavazzo stormed to the top qualifying position in the Modified TC class after six intense rounds of qualifying. Sandy cruised to the victory in A1 and set the stage for wrapping up the title with a win in A2. Ryan Maker had a different idea and took the win, with Sandy crossing the line in second. The championship would come down to a showdown in A3 between Iavazzo and Maker. However, A1 runner-up Jordan Cullis could upset the apple cart and steal the title with a fast winning time in A3. Ultimately, Iavazzo took the A3 win by less than a second ahead of Maker. With two wins, Sandy Iavazzo became the SA Modified TC champion.

David Kukla wins at Czech Buggy championship Rd3

David Kukla wins at Czech Buggy championship Rd3

The 3rd round of the Czech national buggy championship was held close to the city of Most. With the absence of Martin Bayer and Jiri Mára everyone was up to grab some valuable points. The track was well prepared with a flat surface and good grip but come the afternoon heaven opened its gates and heavy rain forced the race control to cancel the meeting. This meant the qualifiers were counted handing Xray’s David Kukla the win in front of Tomáš Kapička. Karel Hájek rounded out the podium. The top 5 is completed by Jan Zámiš and Lukáš Zeman.

HNMC 2013 GP – Report

HNMC 2013 GP – Report

Last weekend the HNMC 2013 GP took place at the Herts Nitro Model Club track. Planed building on last year’s Proline event but with The Neo race on the same weekend it was going to be more club driver friendly. The track, that is considered to be one of UK’s best, was nicely prepped by the club members and a lot of effort went into the meeting by the club’s members and committee and the staff at Westmill farm. The first day of the GP was literally washed away due to rain, rain and more rain. Sunday started with the attempt to remove 2000 litres of water from the track and finally practice could start at 10:40.

Maifield & Hartson win at Surf City Classic

Maifield & Hartson win at Surf City Classic

The annual Pro-Line Surf City Classic has quickly become a staple of Southern California indoor racing. With a laid-back atmosphere, consistent track conditions, and lots of competition, it’s what racing in SoCal is all about. The layout this year rewarded a consistent and fluid driving style while maintaining discipline to not over-drive the obstacles. A true driver’s layout. In 4WD Modified Ryan Maifield and his Associated buggy took over the lead early in the race and never faltered. Despite a late race charge from teammate Steven Hartson, Maifield took the win while Ryan Cavalieri rounded out the podium.
