Orlowski is 1:8 Electric Offroad European Champion

Michal Orlowski is the new 2023 EFRA 1:8 Electric Offroad European Champion.  The seventh running of the championship, the factory Schumacher/Hobbywing driver became the 6th different winner of the title when he took victory at the Rhein-Main Circuit in Germany, ahead of Top Qualifier Bruno Coelho.  With Coelho and Orlowski having two TQ runs each in qualifying, it was the only other driver to top the times, Mugen’s Burak Kilic, who would take the opening A-Main.  Starting third and passing Orlowski early on, Kilic got to the front for the win following a mistake from Coelho.  In the second of the 10-minute encounters it was Orlowski who took the win, the Polish driver going to the front on lap 3 as Coelho got out of shape and eventually crossed the line in 3rd putting him out of title contention.  With A3 the decider between Orlowski, Kilic and local hero Aaron Rönick, who took a second in A2, it was to be an action packed race.  A mistake from Coelho allowed Kilic and Orlowski to go to the front.  As they battled over the lead, Coelho caught them up but out of contention he showed great sportsmanship and allowed the pair to duel it out.  With 2-minutes to go, as Orlowski closed on Kilic at the end of the main straight, there was contact resulting in both drivers needing to be marshalled.  As the field went through and Coelho headed for the win over the Sworkz of Jörn Neumann, 5th and 11th respectively for Kilic and Orlowski gave the Polish driver the over title over Coelho with Kilic completing the podium.

Phend & Maifield lift ’23 ROAR Fuel National titles

Dakotah Phend and Ryan Maifield lifted this year’s ROAR 1:8 Fuel Offroad National titles, Phend successfully defending his Buggy crown but hitting late issues that denied a repeat of the TLR driver’s 2022 double Tekno’s Maifield would take the Truggy win.  Hosted by AMain Hobbies’ Silver Dollar RC Raceway in Chico, California, qualifying saw Phend secure the overall TQ honours for both categories.  In Buggy it was Xray’s Ty Tessmann who was his closest challenger as the only other driver to register a TQ run in the four rounds.  Truggy saw Seth Vandalen secure P2 after coming out top of a three way tie-breaker with Spencer Rivkin (P3) and Jared Tebo (P4).  With the 45-minute Truggy Main up first, Phend was on target to retain his title but clutch issues in the final two laps dropped him to third allowing 5th place qualifier Maifield, who mounted a challenge for the lead earlier in the race, to come through to lift his 7th National Truggy Championship 4.7-seconds ahead of Tebo.  After the disappointment of Truggy, Phend was able to convert his qualifying form into victory winning the 1-hour encounter from Maifield with the Team Associated of Rivkin completing the podium.  In the 1:8 Buggy Junior Final Team Associated’s Jonah Wilson took the win from Top Qualifier Andrew Beauchamp with Phi Long Nguyen third.

Rivkin does double at Worlds Warm-up

The official Warm-up Race for this year’s IFMAR 1:10 Offroad World Championship took place over the weekend with reigning 2WD World Champion Spencer Rivkin doing the double.  With the event at Hobby Action also doubling up as the 1up Buggy Challenge, the Warm-up Race had a limited international entry with just Xray having a major team presence as many team drivers had already attended the track’s high profile annual Desert Classic event back in March.  In qualifying it was Team Associated’s Aydin Horne who took the 2WD TQ ahead of Rivkin with that order reversed in 4WD, while Schumacher’s Broc Champlin completing the Top 3 in both.  In 2WD Rivkin opened with a win but Champlin got the win in A2.  Rivkin would get the A3 win as Top Qualifier Horne dropped to P7 for a final podium line-up of Rivkin with the win from Champlin with Horne third.  In 4WD, Rivkin sealed the deal with wins in A1 & 2 while victory in A3 gave Horne second from Champlin with Dustin Evans P4.

1:8 Buggy Euros Warm-up Race – Announcement

Famed Spanish offroad track RC Redovan has announced that it will run the Warm-up Race for this year’s EFRA 1:8 Nitro Buggy European Championship over the weekend of June 16-18.   Having hosted last year’s IFMAR World Championships, the Baldo brothers owned track previously host the European Championship in 2016 and has become one of the world’s most iconic tracks thanks to its elevation change from the left to the right side of the massive track.   The timetable for the Warm-up Race will see Friday practice, Saturday qualifying and Sunday Finals.  One very important detail to note for racers is that under Spanish law, if you do not have a special license of precursors, in order to use 25% nitro fuel you will be required to buy the fuel within the grounds of the circuit.  The organisers will have fuel available from the main brands including Runner Time, Merlin, Energy and Nitrolux.  As at the World Championship, the fuel must remain deposited at the circuit from Friday to Sunday for all drivers including Spaniards.  Registration for the Warm-up Race is open now – click here

Canas wins International Buggy Challenge

Sworkz’ Juan Carlos Canas completed the double at the International Buggy Challenge in Portugal, the Spaniard winning both Nitro Buggy and eBuggy at the 5th running of the event.  Hosted in Barcelos by top Portuguese international racer Joao Figueiredo, qualifying would see Canas become the Nitro Top Qualifier as he topped 3 of the 5 rounds.  Behind him reigning back to back World Champion and recent Philippine Masters winner David Ongaro secured P2 with a TQ run in the penultimate round with Italy’s Riccardo Berton P3 as the only other driver to top the time sheets.  Winning his Semi Final from Figueiredo, Canas would have pole for the 45-minute from Ongaro, with the trio putting on a superb show with the battle for the win going right to the finish line.  Holding a 2-second lead, a late mistake from Ongaro allowed Canas to get by for the win by just just 3/10th of a second.  Finishing 9-seconds back Figueiredo completed the podium.  In eBuggy it was Ongaro that was the Top Qualifier and while the Team Associated driver won A1, Canas found a way passed the Italian in A2 and A3 for the overall win.  Sworkz’ Daniel Pariente completed the podium ahead of Mayako’s David Ronnefalk.
