Michele Romagnoli takes Rd2 in Italy

Michele Romagnoli takes Rd2 in Italy

The 2nd round of the Italian 1/8th scale Nationals was held last weekend in Gubbio and of course featured some of the fastest drivers in the World taking part. Qualifying went the way of Andrea Pirani, with Michele Romagnoli in 2nd, 8-time World Champion Lamberto Collari in 3rd and Fabio Domanin taking the last direct final spot in 4th. The start of the hour long final saw the lead change numerous times, but by half way distance, Collari has established himself in the lead, that was until his engine flamed out at the 45 minute mark, allowing Romagnoli who had had earlier problems, into the lead, only 7 seconds ahead of the World Champion. A further engine flame out gave Michele the breathing room to take home the vicotory, ahead of Fabio Domanin in 2nd and Collari eventually taking 3rd spot.

Thanks to Michele Romagnoli for the report.

Wilck TQ’s first qualifier in Andernach

Wilck TQ’s first qualifier in Andernach

Viktor Wilck has carried his practice pace through to the first qualifier here at the 2008/2009 ETS finale recording the fastest run ahead of Ronald Volker. The Swede said his Tamiya felt OK for the run and was surprised by how far off his rivals were having not expected his own pace to be good enough to TQ the round.  Volker said he had to switch to safe mode for his run after finding his Yokomo difficult to drive on the fresh set of controlled tyres. The car improved during the run but the former European Champion was still not happy with the feeling of his BD5 compared with yesterday.

Volker sets pace in controlled practice at ETS Rd5

Volker sets pace in controlled practice at ETS Rd5

Ronald Volker is the pace setter here at the end of controlled practice with the LRP/Yokomo driver posting a fastest lap of 16.55 to top the time sheets from Marc Rheinard who was on a 16.70.  The World Championship runner up switched from an LTC-R to the Speed 6 body for his last run and felt it made his BD5 easier to drive.  Volker is running a new chassis, top deck and harder suspension arms on his Yokomo, which are designed to make the car more suitable for European traction levels, and the German is very happy with the results. Slighlty concerned about the weather, he is confident that if it stays dry he is in good shape for qualifiying.

Mark Green wins BRCA 1/8th Rd5

Mark Green wins BRCA 1/8th Rd5

Last weekend, the 1/8th Section visited a new circuit on the South coast of Brighton. The track is formed from a single strip of tarmac with the layout painted over with rope and plastic tubing forming the barriers. In theory, it looked from the outset that the track is too small for the modern day 1/8th chassis but after making the necessary chassis and gear ratio changes, the track became fun to drive. The track is also very smooth so running the car on low tires would help cornering, allow the engine to rev higher along the short back straight and through the infield with no worry of running out of fuel or the chassis bottoming out.

Dennis Fadtke wins Rd3 in Poland

Dennis Fadtke wins Rd3 in Poland

Last weekend saw the third qualifying round of the Polish National Championships take place in Warsaw. The track is located on a former military airport and still used by small aircraft, so every five minutes there was planes flying over at very low level coming in to land. Saturday’s running was canceled due to rain and so all the racing would take place on Sunday, which was the right decision as the sun was shining when the 60 racers took to the track. Dennis Fadtke secured the TQ spot in qualifying and after the three leg finals it was again Dennis who would take the win from Morris Indovino and Patryk Raczynski, with a special mention for seven year old Michal Orlowski who took 6th spot.
