Abernethy & Baird win Rd4 of Irish Nats

The fourth and final round of the Irish National 1:8 Off Road Championships took place at the Navan Nitro Nuts track last Sunday.  With Losi driver Michael Todd having already secured the title with victory at the previous round in Galway from Barkley Abernethy and opting to sit out this encounter the big battle was was for third place in the championship between Derek McCloskey and Gary Baird. In qualifying it was 2008 Champion Mark Harron who took TQ honours with his Hot Bodies ahead of McCloskey’s Hong Nor and the Losi of David Curtis. In the Truggy category, the title was still up for grabs between defending champion Bradley Baird and Galway winner Christopher McCauley. Driving his Losi it was McCauley who got the upper hand in qualifying to take the TQ honours while Baird’s Xray would line up fourth.

In the finals it was Abernethy that took the win with his OS powered Xray over pole sitter Harron who posted the fastest lap of the 45-minute encounter. Completing the podium and claiming his best result of the season was Hobao driver Andrew White. Gary Baird took his Kyosho to fourth to secure 3rd in the championship as his main rival McCloskey was forced to change his reciever battery during the race. In the 30-minute Truggy final Bradley Baird took his third win of the season over McCauley, who set the fastest lap of the race, to successfully defend his Truggy National title.  Xray driver Neil Irwin completed the podium with his best finish of the season.
