Tom Cockerill does double at Belgian GP

Schumacher are reporting on last weekend’s Belgian GP at MBV Kampenhout. This is an annual event held in a park that coincides with a many other local activites, making it a very popular meeting, that quickly becomes over subscribed when entries open. About 18 English drivers made the trip over and all thoroughly enjoyed the meeting. Schumacher UK Team Driver Tom Cockerill was one of the Brits that made the trip over.

The track was open for free practice before the event, with some dedicated drivers arriving the Monday before! Most people arrived on the Thursday or Friday to setup camp and have some track time before the racing started on Saturday. 2wd qualifying started in bright sunshine and temperatures around 26C. The first round was very close between Tom Cockerill and Wouter Wynen, with Wouter edging out Tom by less than 1sec. Round 2 was another close race between these two drivers, but this time Tom came out on top by a similar margin.

Halfway through Round 3 and the heavens opened. This meant that the results would favour the drivers in the lower heats as they had the luck of a dry track. The winner of the top heat only managing 22nd in the round. With a drying track for round 4 the conditions were still difficult and it was Lee Martin that managed to take the final round of qualifying. Tom Cockerill took the overall TQ honours by virtue of his faster time, with Wouter in 2nd and Lee in 3rd.

The finals were to be just as open as qualifying with a different winner to each leg. Leg one was a very close race between the top 3 qualifiers, but a few mistakes let Simon Bettens through to take victory from 4th on the grid. Tom Cockerill drove a much cleaner final in leg 2 to take victory by quite a margin, with a close race between Lee and Simon, finishing 2nd & 3rd respectively. Going into Leg 3 anyone of the top 4 drivers had a chance of victory. Tom drove a very clean race and pulled out quite a lead for the first 4 minutes, but 2 consecutive error’s meant that Lee and Wouter were right with him. As the 3 drivers settled down it was Wouter in the lead followed by Tom and Lee for the last lap and this is how it finished. Tom and Wouter tied on points again, both with a 1st & 2nd, but it was Tom Cockerill who took the overall victory with his Speed Passion powered Cougar SV.

4wd was a very different affair, with qualifying split between just two drivers. Lee took rounds 1 & 2 and Tom was on top for rounds 3 & 4. The TQ position went to Lee as he had the quickest time by less than 1sec. The finals were again dominated by these two drivers, with some very close and clean racing between them. A mistake from Lee in each of the first two legs left Tom to take the wins, with Lee leading from start to finish in leg 3. This gave Tom Cockerill overall victory of the meeting with his Speed Passion powered Cat SX2. Lee finished 2nd and Simon Bettens rounded out the podium in 3rd. All in all it was a highly successful weekend for Schumacher & Speed Passion, taking the spoils in both classes.
