Inzeller Race of Champions 2013 – Report

The 7th annual Inzeller Race of Champions was held on the multi-surface track of the MAC Inzell in the very South of Germany. The event was also the warm-up race of this year’s 4WD German nationals in August. The 2013 edition of the IRoC saw 123 entries in four classes. Free practice on Friday went till 11 o’clock at night with a full rostrum all the time followed by the famous drivers party. The weather was perfect all weekend except of a little thunderstorm Saturday evening, that cost the usual floodlight qualifying heat. The man to beat in Buggy qualifying was Team Durango’s Hupo Hönigl who won all five 2WD qualification rounds and four out of five 4WD rounds. Team Yokomo’s Rene Trauner was the only one who was able to take one of the 4WD Buggy qualifiers from Hupo.

As expected, come the first 2WD A final Hupo took off and never looked back taking a never challenged win. A small mistake of the Team Durango driver in A2 though allowed the Team Associated pair of Roland Hauleitner and Patrick Hofer to slip through meaning the race would be decided in A final number three. In the last run Hupo kept everything together taking the win with the only 15 lap run in the 2WD class.

Although challenged by Rene Trauner in the qualifiers Hupo made his intention clear in the 4WD Buggy class winning the first two A finals in style handing him the overall win with one leg to go. In the last heat spectators were pleased by a heat warming battle between Rene Trauner and Hupo Hönigl, with the better end for the Yokomo driver who won the last heat three tenth of a second from Hupo. An awesome drive from Martin Achter in the finals let the former 2WD and 4WD World Champion take the final step on the podium coming from 6th in the grid.

The Short Course class was run as a fun event in a Reedy Race of Champions format and with 2WD and 4WD Trucks mixed. The best driver of each round had to start last in the grid for the next heat so action was guaranteed for everyone. In 4WD SC Markus Metsch won with his Hacker-powered Mugen MBX6 conversion in front of Christopher Pfeiffer and Martin Kreil both with Team Durango DESC410’s.
