Austrian Electric Buggy nats final round – Report

The final round of the Austrian Electric Buggy nationals took place at the Steyregg track near Linz. The meeting was postponed due to the poor weather back in July. The crew did a great job to rebuild the track and they also mixed cement into the natural clay to increase the grip and durability of the surface. As Hupo Hönigl was on its way to the U.S. to test his 1/12th cars in the wake of the IIC the best chances to take the overall victory were in the hands of Team Associated’s Stefan Pfeifhofer and Yokomo driver Rene Trauner with Martin Kreil (Durango) having a slight chance to take the 4WD class.

During Saturday’s 2WD timed practice many drivers tested different gearbox layouts as both rear and mid motor buggies would work but in the end most drivers opted to go with the mid motor configuration. On Sunday morning drizzle, fog and cold temperatures greeted the drivers and after some discussions between the officials and the drivers the race ultimately started on a swiftly drying track. After three rounds of qualifying the fight for the day’s win and the overall championship was on between Rene Trauner and Stefan Pfeifhofer as Rene TQ’d 2WD and Stefan put his B44.2 on pole position in 4WD.

In 4WD the first A-Main was won by Martin Kreil coming from 4th on the grid with an impressing drive and he was willing to challenge Rene and Stefan, who finished 4th and 5th in the first A-Main, for the overall win. Unfortunately his championship dreams come to an end after Rene won A-Main two and three after getting a big confidence boost from his 2WD result. The 3rd place went to sWorkz team driver Thomas Mayr on his debut in the series with the sWorkz S104 EK1 buggy.
