Danni Eyde-Nielsen wins at DRCMU race

Danni Eyde-Nielsen wins at DRCMU race

Last weekend saw the first round of the PileCup and DRCMU championship series at the indoor track in Broendby, just outside of Copenhagen. 50 drivers attended the race and had a fantastic weekend, with a lot of close racing, good food, big trophies and good fun. In the SuperStock class there was a comeback for Danni Eyde-Nielsen, who had been on “maternity leave” for some years, but he is now back together with his mentor Soeren Boy Holst in the T.O.P. racing team. The class was packed with good drivers, and it was obvious to see after practice that the fight for the 8 A-final places would be really tough.

After the first round of qualifying, it was the Dynamic Duo who topped the list. Danni was first with 28 laps in 5:03 followed by Soeren with 28 5:05, Thomas Hjeresen with 28/5:06, Steven Olsen with 28/5:08 and the talented large scale driver Patrick Folman with 28/5:10. The second round of qualifying was even closer. Danni secured the TQ with 28 laps in 5:04, Steven followed with 28 5:05, Thomas with 28/5:06, Soeren with 28/5:06 and Patrick with 28/5:07 so again there was no room for mistakes. The top 5 altogether improved for the 3rd round except Soeren who scored the same time. Danni improved to 28/5:02, Steven finished 2nd with 28/5:04, Thomas with 28/5:05, Patrick with 28/5:06 and Soeren with 28/5:06 again.

Danni Eyde-Nielsen wins at DRCMU race

Before the finals Danni and Soeren did some brainstorming and decided to make some radical setup changes to Soeren’s car, to get him back on pace. The first couple of laps on of the first A-final leg on the technical track were very close, with some body rubbing included. Danni and Steven got away, while Soeren had to fight with Thomas and Patrick. Danni made one small mistake, allowing Steven to pass, and couldn’t get back in first place. Meanwhile Soeren got away from the other guys and closed the gap to Danni. It seemed that the setup changes worked well. Soeren didn’t try anything stupid on his team mate, so the result saw Steven, Danni, Soeren, Thomas, and Patrick taking the top 5 positions in the first final with the top 3 finishing within 0.4 of a second.

The start of second round was better for everyone. The top 3 had no problems and swiftly opened a gap to the remainder of the field. Soeren made an excellent pass on Steven, diving inside at the end of the main straight. Once again the gap was closed to Danni, and the three guys followed each other like a train. Danni crossed the line 0.5 seconds ahead of Soeren with Steven 0.8 seconds further back, followed by Patrick and Niklas Engholm.

Third and final A-main was a bit more exciting from the start, as Danni’s car decided not to move when the horn sounded. Soeren who started 3rd just managed to avoid a collision, but Patrick on 5th place crashed directly into the rear of Danni’s car and they both ended in the barrier. Dannis car decided to start after that, while Patrick had to pull out the final due to the collision. Up front it was Steven and Soeren who were fighting for the first place. Soeren managed to pass and kept the lead to the finish line with Steven 1.3 seconds behind and Danni further 0.2 seconds down as he had a hard time chasing through the field after the bad start. The mix-up in the finals left all top 3 drivers with 3 points each meaning the race win would be decided by the tie-breaker and the fastest times handing Danni the win in front of Søren and Steven.

Top 5 result:
1. Danni Eyde-Nielsen – T.O.P.
2. Søren Boy Holst – T.O.P.
3. Steven Olsen – Awesomatix
4. Patrick Folman – Tamiya
5. Niklas Engholm – Awesomatix
