Nick Chong wins at Malaysian on-road GP series Rd2

For round 2 of the Malaysian National GP on-road series, the drivers travelled up North to Dungun, a sunny resort town. The track is considerably smaller compared to other Malaysian tracks but always makes for challenging races and it has plenty of traction but heavy tyre wear to offer. In 1/8th scale Team Serpent driver, Nick Chong took advantage of the cooler conditions in the morning to set the fastest lap time of 15.7 sec, which eventually saw him take the TQ position in the first qualifier as the track got slower throughout the day. Nick was the only driver to score a 19 lap run at 5.09, whilst Kenny Ow, last year’s top qualifier, settled for an 18 lap run in 5.04.

The 45 minute final started with Nick leading the pack right from the buzzer, Kenny following closely behind. Charging up from the middle was veteran Serpent driver Jusri Aziz, eventually overtaking Kenny to claim second position. Kenny’s car then lost a front tyre while entering the sweeper which caused his car to become uncontrollable putting him out of the race. Jusri Aziz also had his share of bad luck when the rear belt on his car snapped, ending his race at the half way mark. Nick held on to his lead and a tyre change around the 25 minute mark meant he was able to push hard again to cement his lead. At the checkered flag fell, Nick took his 977 Viper to a well deserved TQ and victory. Another Serpent driver Billy Cheah, came in second whilst Kenny managed to reclaim the final podium spot to make is a Serpent 1-2-3 in the 1/8th class.
