The Protoform Western Canadian Indoor Championship Series round 1 brought racing excitement to the capital city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Hosted by SarCar it was a great season opening race weekend and with two major changes this season, there was lots of anticipation for the opener. On track, the new CRC Black Carpet was the star attraction, presenting the first opportunity for most racers in Western Canada to try this new carpet. The second major change was the AAA Main finals format. In the Touring Modified class the TQ, Team Awesomatix’s Wayne Mah would take the leg 1 win from Danny Buck (Xray) in second and privateer Josh Carter third. Then a break in leg 2 for Wayne would see Danny capitalizing with a win, Josh second. An epic battle in A3, which saw them cross the line just a few seconds apart, Danny posting the faster lap, but Wayne taking the win and first overall, and Josh third.
Touring Stock, the biggest class of the weekend, TQ Wayne Mah (Awesomatix) would win the first two mains, and sit back to watch the rest of the action. Fighting for the rest was Way Mah and Ryan Berry. The results were Way, then Ryan in A1 and Ryan, then Way in leg 2. The third main would bring the tie-breaker with Way, then Josh Carter, then Ryan, for a final order of Wayne, Way and Ryan.
In what ended up being just a fun race, World GT TQ, privateer Josh Carter would win the first two mains and then watch the action in the third. Phil Ursulescu would take both second spots and Dale Ruptash would take third.
Ivan Chan took the A1 win in Mini, followed by Daryl Siba and Tyson Schlechter. A2 would see Daryl come back, Ivan second, and Chris Jackman jump up to third. In the exciting final round, Ivan would come back to take first overall, with Daryl and Chris taking second and third in the round, and in the final results.
Scale Spec had Cam Spence taking the first win, followed within two seconds by both Dennis Beck in second, and Lance Radke in third. The next leg would be exactly the same, so Cam would be a spectator for A3, where Lance and Dennis would again finish within a couple seconds, for a final podium order of Cam, Dennis, and Lance.
In 1/12th Stock, the second biggest class, it was Jason Lochthwe that would take the wins in A1 and A2. So the battle for second was on in A1 between Xray’s Ryan Rice and Ivan Chan. A2 had Warren Sippel, then Ivan, while in A3 Ivan came in front of Warren to give the final result of Jason, Warren, and Ivan.
1/12th Modified was definitely the most dynamic class all weekend, with three different winners. Josh Carter would take the A1 win, and then have mechanical DNFs for the next two rounds. TQ Jason Lochthwe and Ivan would take the rest of A1. Jason, Ivan and Dean Temple would take R2 while Ivan, Taylor Mogard and Jason would take A3. In the end, it was Jason, Ivan and Taylor.
In another just for fun race, Formula, Jason Lochthwe would take the TQ and overall win by a full lap over Ivan Chan. Round 2 of the WCICS will be at PRCC in Penticton, British Columbia.
