2017/18 Italian GT12 Series Rd1 – Report

The inaugural season of the 2017/18 Italian GT12 Series kicked off in Remedello di Sopra on the very technical indoor asphalt track of Angiolino Minispeedway. The series will unfold through six rounds across northern Italy and will see drivers chasing the crown of the GT12 class, which recently saw growing interest in the country thanks to its performance, simplicity and contained costs. The qualification rounds, held during the morning, saw Mattia Dall’Oca confirming his status of a GT12 specialist he and laid down three TQs marked by a very consistent pace and a record-breaking 13.366 seconds lap that finally proved unbeatable for the rest of the day. Locking the first row for the finals, Alessandro Rampini clinched P2 with a faultless drive in Q3, while his brother, Roberto Rampini was a very close third.

The action-packed A-mains delivered some early surprises with Mattia getting caught in traffic and losing the lead temporarily in both A1 and A2, but recovering smartly in both runs and thus securing the win for round 1 of the Italian GT12 Series and the 150 points coming with it. A solid second in all A-mains, Alessandro Rampini showed consistency and great ability to stay out of trouble, while Lorenzo Sandonini recovered from P4 on the grid in both A2 and A3 to secure the final spot on the podium. The series will move to the mighty indoor carpet track of RC Landia in Scandiano for round 2 on March 18th.
