Nagashima claims TQ at fifth round of OneTen at RCI

Yugo Nagashima is the top qualifier for the 5th round of the OneTen series presented by Infinity. The Serpent driver wrapped up the top qualifying spot with his second round TQ in Q2 but only took 2nd in the 3rd and final 6 minute qualifier. The 3rd round of qualifying went to his Serpent team mate Rocket Zhang who as a result will now line up in 2nd on the grid for this afternoon’s triple 4-minute mains. JJ Wang will line up in 3rd for Xray just ahead of Yokomo driver Motor King with Gary Huang completing the top 5. Asked about his qualifying, Yugo said that in the 2nd qualifier he made a small mistake and hit the curb which allowed JJ to lead but once he regained his rhythm he could go to the top of the times again. Happy with the setup of his car in Q2, for Q3 he tried something completely different but it wasn’t as good and will revert to the previous setup for the finals.

Nagashima takes first qualifier in Shanghai

Yugo Nagashima has taken the opening round of qualifying in the Infinity Modified class at the 5th round of the OneTen series in Shanghai. The Serpent driver was 1 and a half seconds up on Xray driver JJ Wang, with the American a further 2 seconds up on local Serpent driver Rocket Zhang in 3rd. Coming from the 2nd fastest heat, it was Motor King who headed the Yokomo effort in 4th while Stick King completed the top 5, making it a solid start for Serpent. Describing his first run as ‘ok, but big push’, Nagashima will look to make a change for Q2 but conceded that any changes made on this track seem to make no difference to the overall feel of the car. A fan of the RCI V2 track, having won the AOC here last year, Yugo said that JJ is fast but he believes he has the pace to beat the US driver if he can tweak the setup further.

Marc Rheinard dropped by Infinity

In a shock and totally unexpected decision, Infinity has terminated its contract with electric touring car icon Marc Rheinard. Having joined the touring car newcomers at the start of the 2017 season after a 22-year long relationship with Tamiya, the news comes just two days after fellow countryman Yannic Prumper announced on social media that he had been dropped from the team despite still being in contract. One of the sport’s all time greats with four World titles to his credit, Rheinard revealed he was without a team for 2020 on social media posting the following statement:

Having taken a few days to come to terms with a shock decision I received just days before Christmas, I want to let you know that my contract with Creation Model/Infinity has been terminated with immediate effect. I didn’t see this decision coming as my contract was set to run until the end of 2023. I can’t really explain why I got fired as there was no real reasons in the mail I got. My results were pretty decent including winning twice the Reedy Race of Champions, Nationals and ETS so I don’t believe this was the reason. Only the second team I have raced for in my touring car career I had three interesting years with Infinity with many ups and downs but I must now prepare to move on. The timing of their decision to drop me from the team has meant there has been no time for me to find a sponsor for 2020 yet.

In the meantime, I will start to work for ToniSport now and then see how things go and whether I can find a new sponsor. Until then, I will race representing Tonisport and chose cars I like. A big thanks to my brother Toni for taking me on board in his company and I’m really excited for this new adventure in my life. As the car was not really on point at most races, I’ll come back stronger than ever. See you at the track very soon.

Gary Huang takes popular SIGP Nitro class win

Gary Huang has taken an emotional win tonight in Xiamen, China in the 1/8th Main final. The Xray driver overcame a flameout to take a very popular win in front of a partisan crowd at the SIGP. Behind it was Merlin Depta who finished in 2nd place, one and a half laps back, the German driver leading following the Chinese driver’s flameout. Completing the podium here at the ARC International Raceway was veteran Italian racer Marco Vanni. Pole sitter Jeff Hamon had a troubled race as he lost touch with Gary Huang early on before hitting major engine troubles, the result of the Australian having set his engine too lean prior to the final. Feeling the win was retribution for not being able to travel to the Worlds last month in California due to visa problems, long time mechanic Gavin Kwok was overcome with emotion as his driver took the checkered flag. Explaining his flameout, he said he was on his in-lap when the Max engine rolled to a stop near the end of the lap. The Xray driver was running 2 laps more than everyone else but he believes it was the smaller tires that had increased consumption and caught them out. Restarted and back on track he battled his way back from 4th, pushing like crazy to take over the lead again with 15 minutes left and hold on for the rest of the race and take his first SIGP nitro win.

Jeff Hamon is Nitro Top qualifier in China

With EP now over, attention turns back to Nitro, which will run through the rest of Saturday and all through Sunday. With the nitro action again taking place under flood lights it was the perfect conditions to set a fast time but drama in the fastest heat as the car of Meen Vejrak, who was on TQ pace, start to spew smoke out the rear of the bodyshell for about 2 laps before going off at the end of the straight and going on fire. A dragging battery cable seemingly the culprit but the car is completely destroyed from both the fire and the impact. This misfortune allowed Jeff Hamon to take over at the front and claim the TQ spot ahead of another Thai Maxima driver Charlee P, with top seed Kim Ki Heung in 3rd, Motor King in 4th and Meen Vejrak with his Q2 time giving him P5 for tomorrow’s 45 minute A-main. Jeff felt he had a slipping clutch throughout his run but said it stayed consistent for the entire run. Happy with a change he made to softer springs, he thinks for the final the car is easy to drive and apart from setting the clutch properly will work out strategy closer to the race time.
