2 out of 2 for Cavalieri

Round 2 of action at the Reedy Race of Champions saw Ryan Cavalieri pull off another win, this time the reigning champion taking a more straight forward victory over Lee Martin and Dakotah Phend.  For the other two winners of the opening round, the second encounter wouldn’t go as well.  Running in the same heat as Cavalieri, Spencer Rivkin would end up finishing as he started with fourth while Dustin Evans, running in the opening race, lost ground dropping two places to finish 5th.  The winner of that race would be Ty Tessmann who led home Ryan Maifield while the round was completed by reigning Open Class Champion Broc Champlin who took the win from Rob Gillespie when the latter got it wrong coming onto the main straight.

Cavalieri kicks off Reedy Race defence with a win

Defending Reedy Race Champion Ryan Cavalieri has kicked off the 24th running of the event with a hard earned win.  Starting from the second row of the grid, the Associated driver would win the opening race at OCRC from team-mate and pole starter Alex Kosciuszek but he had to work hard for it following a poor opening lap and a mistake 3-minutes in while challenge for the lead.  Last year’s 4WD Open Champion Broc Champlin made an impressive Invitational class debut as he led for 5-laps from 7th on the grid before getting pushed back to 4th. In the second of the three encounters, Spencer Rivkin took the win over Ryan Maifield, the World Champion having led for a lap before a mistake – this year’s track challenging all the drivers.  Behind, Jared Tebo completed the Top 3.  Having set the pace in practice yesterday, Dustin Evans would round out the first round of races with the most convincing win.  Starting on pole he immediately built up a massive lead to cross the line 7.3-seconds ahead of Ty Tessmann who was pleased to have been able to work his way through from 10th on the grid.

Maifield & Evans quickest ahead of Reedy Race of Champions

Ryan Maifield and Dustin Evans are quickest going into the start of racing at the 24th running of the Reedy Race of Champions tomorrow morning.  The former champions set the fastest times over the 3 rounds of practice with Maifield going top in 2WD when he was fastest in the final practice.  In 4WD, Evans maintained his earlier form to remain quickest while finishing second fastest in 2WD.  Ty Tessmann would end the day 2nd quickest in 4WD in between Evans and Maifield while clocking the 3rd quickest 3-consecutive laps of the OCRC Raceway track in 2WD. Failing to improve on his time in the third round of practice, reigning champion Ryan Cavalieri ended up 5th and 6th fastest in 4WD and 2WD respectively.

Evans leads the way in RROC practice

Dustin Evans leads the way in practice for this year’s 24th running of the Reedy Race of Champions.  The former champion was fastest after the first two rounds of practice in both 2WD and 4WD at OCRC in Huntington Beach.  With Nick Black building his toughest track for OCRC’s fifth hosting of the infamous race, behind Evans it was Ty Tessmann who was second fastest in both classes with former champions Ryan Maifield and Dakotah Phend completing the Top 3 in 4WD and 2WD respectively.  For reigning champion Ryan Cavalieri, he would kick off his quest for a fifth Reedy Race title with the fourth fastest 3-consecutive laps in each class, the Associated driver knowing better than most that practice pace doesn’t count for much once the Reedy’s heads up race format gets underway.

Dallas Mathiesen (1948 – 2018)

It is with great sadness that we report the death of a pillar of the RC Community, Dallas Mathiesen. The president of IFMAR and EFRA for so long it seemed for most, especially the younger racers, that he had always just been there and most hoped he always would. We all knew him for his calm under pressure personality, giving out penalties at major races around the word, his mediation skills, his big smile, rock star hair and for his vice-like grip which you experienced if he ever grabbed your shoulder or when he shook your hand. A memorable figure, what a lot of people won’t know is that he spent his life working with troubled kids and those less fortunate in his native Sweden, a job he never seemed to be able to retire from despite his many attempts. He will be sorely missed and our condolences go out to his family.

Orlowski does the double at DHI Cup

Michal Orlowski has done double at the DHI Cup retaining both Offroad titles at the Danish event.  Having wrapped up the 2WD after 2 A-Mains earlier in the day, mistakes in the opening 4WD main meant the things would go to A3 but having learnt from his errors in A1 Orlowski took convincing wins in A2 and A3 to complete the perfect start to his 2018 season. With new Schumacher team-mate Joern Neumann winning A1, the German would back this up with two second places to claim second overall for the first Schumacher 1-2 at a major international event in a long time. Completing an impressive weekend for himself, Elias Johansson completed the podium in Odense with the 13-year-old marking himself as one to watch in 2018.

Volker claims win No.8 at DHI Cup

Ronald Volker has claimed an 8th win at the DHI Cup.  The Yokomo driver secured the victory at the 18th running of the Danish Classic with a convincing win in the deciding A-Main.  Having had a messy opening lap in A2, with Yannic Prumper the main benefactor to take the win, Volker went into the third encounter determined to return to the form he has shown when he took all four qualifiers. While suffering a scare when his car hit a bump on the opening lap, the World Champion quickly established a lead that he would extend to over 2-second by the finish. For Prumper his weekend would net a Yokomo 1-2, the German clearly delighted to competitive again after a lean 2017 season. Completing the podium in Odense would be Marc Rheinard, the Infinity driver having gone into the final leg with a chance of the win but unable to get by Elliott Harper soon enough to do anything about Volker.

Neumann wins opening 4WD encounter

Joern Neumann was a surprise winner of the opening A-Main of 4WD at the DHI Cup, the new Schumacher signing benefiting from mistakes from both his team-mate Michal Orlowski and young Swedish star Elias Johansson.  Starting from the TQ, freshly crown 2WD champion Orlowski would make a mistake allowing Johansson to go to the front.  Chasing down the Associated driver, the Pole would touch wheels with the 2WD runner up with sending his car flying off the track with it getting caught up in the sponsor banners of the drivers stand.  Losing around 4-seconds Orlowski would rejoin behind Neumann, with Johansson looking good for the win but with little over a minute to run he would make a mistake in the centre section of the track rolling onto the straight with both Schumacher’s getting through.  Neumann would see off Orlowski while a second mistake would prevent Johansson from trying to retake the lead with him crossing the line 3rd.
