Jacinto & Dela Cruz crowned Philippine 1:10 Offroad National Champions

In a major boost for the offroad racing scene in the Philippines, after a long absence the country hosted National Championships for 1:10 Offroad with the event attracting a record entry for a Nationals.  With over 100 entries for the 2-day event at the Circulo Verde track in Manila City, home to Asia’s biggest annual offroad event the Philippine Masters, in qualifying it was Sworkz driver Dino Jacinto who took the 4WD TQ with the 2WD honours going to Jomil Dela Cruz at the end of the three rounds of qualifying.  In the triple finals, Jacinto would win the opening two encounters to secure the title early ahead of Dela Cruz and Tyler Cheung.  In 2WD, Dela Cruz would also convert the TQ into the title albeit needing the win in A3 to do so.  He was joined on the podium by Rains Viola and A2 winner Gerome Ling.  The event also marked a major improvement for the track with its new oiled surface a game changer.  More and more racers/hobbyist are enjoying the track with it now having good grip anytime of the day and most of all, it’s rubber friendly.  The existing layout and surface will be used for 2024 edition of the Philippine Masters which takes place on April 18-21.

Neumann title defence on with Semi win

Qualifying only 14th, Joern Neumann’s defence of his IFMAR 1:8 GT World Championship title is still on after the Sworkz driver took victory in the first of the Semi Finals in Sydney.  Starting from sixth on the grid, Neumann worked his way to the front chasing down the Serpent of pole sitter Jeff Hamon.  With no fuel stops allowed before 7-minutes, when Hamon and Neumann pitted they would both suffer flame outs.  On the second stop, Hamon was in earlier than Neuman but once again flamed out something the Australian would suffer on all his stops.  With a clean second stop for Neumann, this would give him a lead he would not give up.  Starting from the pitlane after a problem in the warm-up, Italian Gabriele Paloschi would get past his Serpent team-mate to finish second, the Top 3 securing their spot in the 1-hour Main event.  Unfortunately for Peter Jovanovic, having run second for the opening 5-minutes, he ran was over when he stripped a gear on his Capricorn.

Neumann wins 1:8 GTe World Cup

Sworkz’ Joern Neumann has won the IFMAR 1:8 GTe World Cup in Australia repeating the feat he achieved in Miami almost 4-years ago. Qualifying second for the race in Sydney behind the Xray of Top Qualifier Natanaele Senesi, the German would have a terrible start to A1 going off onto the grass in the first corner as his team-mate & nitro mechanic Herfried Pucher from fourth on the grid took the early lead. Half way through the 6-minute encounter Neumann would take the lead before going on to win by a comfortable 5-seconds as Pucher just held off Senesi for second. In A2, Neumann nailed the start getting the holeshot on Senesi but Senesi would make a late charge in the race closing the gap until he was hit by a backmarker allowing Neumann to cruise to the overall win.  While the title was won, as the reigning Nitro GT World Champion which he will try to defend tomorrow, Neumann wasn’t going to get the opportunity of track time pass him by and appeared with a different bodyshell in A3 to test it for his nitro Semi final. On the track Neumann took the win narrowly from the Capricorn of Peter Jovanovic but the Australian was later handed a 1-lap penalty for ‘Un-sportmanship’ for failing to re-address early race contact. This gave Senesi second for A3 but overall Jovanovic was runner-up with the Italian completing the podium.

‘Of course goal is to keep the title’ but ‘the class has changed a lot’ – Neumann on 1:8 GT World title defence

Think Joern Neumann and you think World class offroad racer.  The German is a multiple offroad European Champion, a multiple offroad World Champion Finalist and the only European to ever to win the legendary Reedy Offroad Race of Champions.  Ironically his biggest win in the sport didn’t involve navigating any jump sections, and this coming week the factory Sworkz driver will defend that title despite not having raced in the category since adding the IFMAR World title to his CV.  It’s January 2020 and the World has no idea of two major things that are about to happy – Neumann is going to become an onroad World Champion and a thing called Covid is going to shut down the World just afterwards!

Canas leads Sworks 1-2 at European Championship

Juan Carlos Canas has finally achieved a major championship title with the rapid Spaniard leading an Sworkz 1-2 at the EFRA 1:8 Offroad European Championship in Redovan, Spain.  In qualifying, Canas was Top Qualifier topping 3 of the 5 rounds at the 2022 World Championship venue.  Reigning World Champion Davide Ongaro was P2 with the fastest time in Q2 with Bruno Coelho P3 having set the quickest time in the opening qualifier.  With Saturday originally scheduled as Finals day, the threat of heavy rain prompted a change of schedule to get the event completed by Friday night.  In the Semi Finals Canas took the first 20-minute encounter from Bryan Baldo while a retirement exited Coelho from proceedings.  In the other Semi, Ongaro took the win from Burak Kilic and Elliot Boots, but a slower race time it was Canas on pole for the final with defending champion David Ronnefalk lining up 6th.  Racing into the night and finishing under the flood lights Canas dominated the 45-minutes adding the fastest lap to his tally on the way to victory by half a lap from his 2-time European Champion team-mate Elliot Boots.  Ongaro’s Team Associated would complete the podium 4-second ahead of Mugen’s Burak Kilic with a similar gap back to Infinity’s Riccardo Berton in fifth.  Ronnefalk’s year long reign as Champion would end in a retirement with 5-minutes remaining.
