ROAR Region 5 regionals – Report

ROAR Region 5 regionals – Report

The ROAR Region 5 regionals took place at the Summit RC Raceway in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The race saw over 130 entries from Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri. The track received a fresh layout from the man that’s responsible for the layouts at this year’s ROAR Nationals, and IFMAR World Championships in Chico, CA, Kevin Jelich. The one day event used rocket round qualifying to seed the main events, which resulted in some very close racing all day long into the night. Although lit by temporary lighting, the large shadows and now vague depth perception added an additional level of difficulty to the main events. With tight qualifying all day and 6 seconds separating the A-main field, several Modified Truck drivers felt poised to have a shot at the title. Team Associated driver’s occupied the top 4 spots on the starting grid with Kai Goff on the TQ spot, Ben Ellis starting 2nd, Adam Rayls 3rd, and Cole Tollard 4th. The long shadows on the night track seemed most prevalent at the beginning of the main event as Kai, Ben, and Cole traded the lead back and forth. Once the drivers had adjusted to the night conditions, it was Cole Tollard in 1st, Kai Goff 2nd, and Ben Ellis 3rd.

John Cravotta wins at R/C Madness SC nationals

John Cravotta wins at R/C Madness SC nationals

John Cravotta lead the X Factory team to a clean sweep of the podium in the R/C Madness Short Course Nationals this past weekend. Cravotta TQ’d all three qualifiers but bobbled just before the triple on the first lap into the A main, falling well back in the pack. Third qualifier Paul Sinclair led at the end of lap one, with Tony Phalen and Jim Edmonds right behind. On lap two, Tony tapped Paul on the off-camber. Sinclair rolled and Phalen waited for him, allowing Edmonds through into the lead, and they stayed that way through the first half of the race. Cravotta was beginning his charge up through the pack and about the three minute mark, Phalen bobbled getting on the straight, letting Cravotta through into third. Moments later at the end of the straight, Paul got by Jim, and it was a X Factory 1-2-3, Sinclair, Edmonds, Cravotta. On the next lap, Sinclair pulled a wheelie on the main straight, a gust of wind caught his truck flipping it over onto its lid, and much to the amazement of the crowd the truck slid all the way to the sweeper. Edmonds lost a bit of concentration at all this, and Cravotta vaulted into the lead, with Edmonds right behind, Sinclair falling to fourth. Knowing that his team mate was behind him, Cravotta put it on cruise control, while Sinclair worked his way into third. Two corners from the end, Paul passed Jim to finish Cravotta, Sinclair, Edmonds.

Alvin Koh dominates RaceWorks Elite Racing Rd6

While weather issues dominated a large part of the season, the story of round 6 of the RaceWorks Elite Racing Series saw the domination of Team Tamiya SG and Alvin Koh. In qualifying, Tamiya’s Nicholas Lee secured the TQ position, followed by Team Xray Singapore’s PY Tang, with series leader Alvin Koh (Tamiya) in 3rd position. Qualifying strongly also was Team Yokomo Singapore’s Marcus Choo in 4th. Given Nicholas’ pedigree, his pole position for the first leg of the 4-leg finals was always going to be a tough one for anyone to overcome. What his racing rivals could not overcome, Nicholas’ electronics did as they shut-down after the first lap. This opened the door for Alvin to come through to take the win. Confirming the strong pace of Team Yokomo Singapore was the 2nd position finish for Alan Leung, with PY Tang in 3rd.

Jörn Neumann doubles at German 4WD nationals

Only 47 drivers show up at the technical clay track that features an U.S. inspired layout.
