Winter Jumps Series Rd4 – Report

The fourth round of the Finnish Winter Jumps Series was held at the Äänekoski indoor track located near Jyväskylä. The permanent indoor track features a full-size off-road track and an even bigger on-road track with the slippery surface making for a narrow driving line. Saturday was 2WD day and straight from the start it was evident that the fight for the win was on between three drivers: Joona Haatanen, Pekko Iivonen and local rising star Jamiel Gabrielsson. With Joona having problems in the first qualifying it was Jamiel who started with a TQ with Pekko and Lauri Ruotsalainen in 2nd and 3rd respectively. From the second round Joona took charge of the qualifying, winning the next three rounds to claim the overall TQ in front of Jamiel in 2nd, Pekko in 3rd, Konsta Saarinen in 4th, Lauri in 5th and Mikko Luopajärvi in 6th.

Maximum points haul for Coelho at ETS Daun

Having opened his title defence with a 6th place in Austria, Bruno Coelho made amends for the disappointing result by taking maximum championship points this weekend from the second round of the Euro Touring Series in Daun, Germany.  Winner of the same event last year, the Xray driver again secured the overall TQ and despite the best efforts of a very on form Freddy Sudhoff wrapped up the overall win in A2.  Sudhoff would secure 2nd overall with the win in A3 ahead of Christopher Krapp who avoided a first lap pile up – 2nd place promoting the Yokomo driver to fourth overall.  The incident was triggered by Ronald Volker making contact with Alexander Hagberg and with them crossing the loop to 7th and 9th respectively it was Volker who completed the podium with his 3rd and 4th from the first two Mains.  Coming into the weekend as the championship points leader, the 3rd place is enough for Volker to retain that lead – the advantage still 3-points but now over Coelho.

Elliott Boots wins season opening Montpellier GP

The Montpellier GP, season opener for Europe’s 1/8th off-road drivers, was held this past weekend at the Mini Bolide Montpellierain track in Montpellier, France. As usual the event attracted most of Europe’s 1/8th off-road stars as well as local talent and to no one’s surprise it was 2018 IFMAR World Champion, Italy’s Davide Ongaro (Team Associated) with the overall TQ after coming out on top in Q2 and Q3. Mugen’s Robert Batlle came in 2nd from new SWorkz signing, Juan Carlos Canas. Davide then also secured the pole position for the hour-long Nitro Buggy A-main event from Juan Carlos in 2nd and Kyosho’s Riccardo Berton in 3rd. The race then looked pretty straight forward for Davide until his battery broke in the closing stages of the race, allowing Kyosho’s Elliott Boots take a narrow win from Juan Carlos Canas and Riccardo Berton, all ending the main on the same lap. Robert Battle and Marco Baruffolo would come in 4th and 5th to round out the top 5.

Coelho on pole at ETS Daun

Bruno Coelho will start tomorrow’s A-Main at ETS Daun on pole position, the Xray driver seeing off a valiant effort from Freddy Sudhoff in the fourth & final qualifier. An exciting qualifying at Round 2 of the championship would set-up a three way fight to be Top Qualifier in Germany, Coelho taking Q1, Alexander Hagberg Q2 and Sudhoff Q3.  While a mistake early on put Hagberg out of contention, Sudhoff was more than up for the fight for his first ETS TQ pushing Coelho hard for the first half of the 5-minutes with the Awesomatix driver top of the timing screens.  Coelho, however, drove a more consistent second half of the heat and it was enough to give him TQ run no.2 of the weekend by 3/10ths of a second and with it his first TQ bonus point of Season #12, the Portuguese driver having picked up 5 of them on his way to last season’s title.  Getting a P5 in Q4, Hagberg’s TQ run and 3rd in Q3 will put his Xray third with the honour of best of the rest going to championship points leader Ronald Volker who got fourth after the tie breaker with Yannic Prumper.
