Branson wins second round of Essex Winter Series

Round 2 of the Essex Winter Series presented by Infinity took place over the weekend with Kyle Branson taking the win.  In qualifying Branson topped the first three qualifiers before having issues in Q4 which was topped by Alex Thurston securing the Capricorn driver 2nd on the grid.  A string of P2 times would give the Xray of Harley Eldridge 3rd on the grid ahead of Schumacher’s Andy Murray.  While Thurston and Eldridge pushed Branson in the single leg final they were not able to pass the British National Champion and they finished as they qualified.  In Stock it was Zak Finlay who took the TQ and win with Billy Fletcher second and Tony Broad third.  Starting from pole Shane Chipolina won Front Wheel Drive with his Schumacher while in the Junior E class James Snashall took the victory having also started from the front of the grid.

DMS Winter Series Round 1 – Report

The opening round of the four round DMS Model Car Club Winter Series kicked off over the weekend in Watford, England.  A technical and challenging layout was set for the drivers, with several sections extremely challenging to get consistent and at the same time be fast.  The risk certainly returned reward on clean laps, but really (REALLY) hurt your time with an error.  We had four rounds of FTD qualifying and in 2wd it was young Abe Lyons (Associated) who took the TQ with his Reedy powered B6.4.  Ellis Stafford (Schumacher) lined up 2nd with his Cougar LD2 from Karl Jackson (Schumacher) in third.  The rest of the guys straight into the A direct were Rich Miller (Schumacher), Shaun Garratt (Associated) and Thomas Lau (Associated), the rest would come via the bump ups.

After the first two rounds it was Schumacher pilot Alex Brocklebank who looked like he may walk away with it, q2 was close between himself and Xray driver Chris Lovey separated by 8 thousandths of a second. Chris would fight back and take TQ in round 3 and 4 and set the fastest time in the process. Callum Chapman and his Vulcan RC Xray t4 showed consistency and pace only being a few seconds back of the leading pair. Another Schumacher driver of Dan Burks would build during the day improving his round results to take 4th on the grid. Matt Cook and his Mugen would leave it until the finals qualifying rounds to solidify his place in the a final, ahead of the Awesomatix of Dan Leonard. Hamilton ‘having fun’ with RC at Japanese Grand Prix

It seems RC is the big thing in the paddock at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton the latest driver to take time out from his F1 duties and enjoy a bit of RC fun in the Suzuka paddock.  A video shared on the official F1 instagram page shows the 7-time World Champion driving a Tamiya Lunch Box out through his Mercedes-AMG Petronas team’s garage and into the paddock where he enjoys pulling wheelies with the iconic 80’s 1:12 truck.  Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team shared a photo of their star driver and the Lunch Box on their Facebook page with the simple description ‘Just out here having fun’.  We already know how much fun RC is and it is great to see both iconic Japanese RC brands Kyosho and Tamiya being enjoyed by Formula 1.  Hamilton famously appeared on BBC’s Blue Peter show racing an RC car well before he became one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time.

Sturdy triples at Australian Offroad Nationals

The 2022 RCRA Australian 1:10 Offroad Titles, sponsored by SpeedyRC, was held at Chargers RC over the weekend. While the 5 day event had its difficulties with rains cutting practice short, the big winner was Team Associated’s Christopher Sturdy who took the TQ and win in 2WD, 4WD and Mod Truck for a National Title triple. The first of the Premier classes lived up to the hype, with all of Australia’s best talent turning up to put on a show. Sturdy would take TQ all 4 rounds of 2WD qualifying with Lachlan Donnelly often nipping at the heels only a couple of seconds off. A clean display in A1 allowed Sturdy to pull a small gap over Donnelly. In A2 Donnelly was on song, following Sturdy around within a few tenths for most the race but Sturdy was not shaken and would also take victory in A2 giving him overall win.

Bruno Coelho has cruised to victory in the opening A-Main of the ISTC World Championship in Gubbio, Italy.  The one delay in proceedings at the 11th running of the championship had no effect on the pace show by the defending Champion in qualifying.  Taking all 6 qualifiers, from the pole position Coelho was able to pull clear of his rivals, the closest of those being No.2 Christopher Krapp,  Krapp in turn had a big advantage of Akio Sobue who finished third ahead of Ronald Volker, who came through from 8th on the grid.

Coelho to defend World title from TQ

Reigning ISTC World Champion Bruno Coelho is to defend his title from the TQ, the Xray driver making it 4 out of 4 in the latest round of qualifying in Gubbio, Italy.  A delayed start to Day 3 of the Championship following the heavy rain yesterday that left a very slick track. When qualifying did finally get underway at lunchtime it looked like the new conditions might result in some changes at the top.  While Coelho led off the qualifier, it was Christopher Krapp who set the early pace. However, once Coelho adapted to the lower traction, he resumed normal service despite Krapp’s impressive effort for the closest TQ battle we have seen so far.  Behind the big surprise of the round was Serpent’s Alessio Mazzeo, the 2016 Nitro Touring Car World Championship podium finisher here at the same track, posting the 3rd fastest time ahead of Alexander Hagberg, Hayato Ishioka and Ronald Volker.
