Hungarian Offroad Championships Rd3 report

Hungarian Offroad Championships Rd3 report

Last weekend the 3rd round of the Hungarian Offroad Championship was held in Apaj, a small village about 50km’s from the capital city of Budapest. The event was organised by RCOR, the biggiest Hungarian RC club. They prepared well for this event, once again they arranged permanent marshals so drivers did not need to help after their heats which was quite good news in the very hot weather, around 35°C, and huge dust. Trackside buffet was taking care all of our dining needs. Their track is very versatile, it has all kind of jumps (table, double, triple, step-down) and corners (sweeper, harpin, chicane) especially the long high-speed banked corner after the main straight where you can make your laptime with a big brave heart or sky rocket the car on the ruts into the fence.

The track was just lightly refurbished with a thin layer of tarmac being laid, with the island being rebuilt and new paint on the track, it is set to be a very exciting race. This round is again a tough fight for all racers, the track is a mixture of semi-technical and high speed, with a straight of about 150ft, it calls for good balance of top speed as well as torque out of the corners in the infield.

The 2011 10th off road European Championships is being held in Pao, Southern France at the ‘Mini Racing Club Palois’ track. This years ‘Euros warmup’ even, a chance for competitors to gain some experience before the main event, coincided with the 4th round of the 2011 French National series as both events ran together in Pao last weekend. Hupo Honigl and Martin Kriel made the trip over together but had to miss most of Fridays open practice due to their travel arrangements – and this being first time out for Kriel with the prototype 2WD DEX210, it was a steep learning curve.  Hupo Honigl however quickly established his dominance in 2WD with the prototype DEX210 2WD buggy, taking every single qualifier and A finals for the win.

Marc Rheinard wins Reedy Race of Champions

Marc Rheinard wins Reedy Race of Champions

The Reedy Race of Champions was held last weekend at Nor-Cal hobbies in Union City, CA. Featuring a unique racing format with a grueling 8 rounds of heat races normally consisting of 4 rounds of racing per day., all races began with random starting position and ended with points associated to each driver for their finish position. The overall winner was determined by the lowest tally of the best out of 6 finishes as drivers were able to throw out their worst (highest) 2 scores. This year the weather did not cooperate with the four rounds of heats per day. On day one, the rain delayed a few heats and then washed out round 4 leaving day two for 5 rounds of competition instead of the normal four.  Team Thunder Power RC’s newest signing Marc Rheinard, driving a Tamiya TRF417 battled his way to the Championship title, while his Thunder Power RC team mate Victor Wilck kept the pressure on to finish 2nd. Former World Champion Atsushi Hara, driving a Hot Bodies TCX took 3rd.
