2018/19 Essex Winter Series – Announcement

Oli Meggitt and the well-known EWS Events team have announced the 2018/19 edition of the popular Essex Winter Series. The five-event championship will take place at EWS’s indoor venue in the south of the UK. The EWS is one of the most popular on-road series in the UK, and will be keeping many of their simple, straight forward rules the same again this year. There will be classes for Modified and Super Stock 13.5 Blinky Touring Cars, plus a new “Amateur Stock” class for this year. Amateur Stock will follow the lead of the ETS in trying to attract new racers to the bigger events – it will use a hand-out 17.5 motor, is open to novice/new drivers, and doesn’t allow any drivers with sponsorship to enter. All classes will race on a brand new Sweep tyre, which offers more grip and speed than the previous version, whilst remaining very consistent over many runs – perfect for the huge EWS track which uses the now-standard ETS carpet. Entries are now open via the EWS website and are expected to fill quickly. More details on the series, along with full rules and information, can also be found on the site or via email to Oli Meggitt (oli.meggitt@gmail.com). More details on the signature “EWS International” race, to take place in December, will follow in a few months’ time.

2018 ROAR 1/10th Off-road Nationals – Report

Each year, RC racers from all over the country patiently wait for the most prestigious race of the year, the 1/10th ROAR Off-Road Nationals. This year’s host to the ROAR Nats was none other than the popular Hobby Action R/C Raceway in Chandler, AZ. While the temperature outside was a scorching 100F+, inside the spacious track facility was a cool and comfortable 74F thanks to the luxury of having air conditioning in a huge facility. One of the challenging aspects of racing is the track. This time, however, it wasn’t about the difficulty of the layout, but more so the track’s evolution. From early on, the track required some treads to make laps happen, but as the track transitioned from low, med, to high bite, it required less tread and eventually slick tires. Naturally, this also required drivers to adapt to a more precision style of driving that not many were able to master over the weekend.

Austrian 1/8th IC Track Nationals Rd4 – Report

The fourth round of the Austrian 1/8th IC Track Nationals was held at the MORAC track last weekend. The usual suspects of Mihelic and Pucher battled for the top spot on the 1/8th Nitro class. Setting the early pace in free practice on Saturday, Mihelic TQ’d while Pucher won the Super Pole with only one Lap to qualify directly to the main final. The 45-minute main final was a clean run for the pair that separated from the field by almost five laps, leaving behind their main competitor Gerhard Kandelhart in 3rd place. It was a pitty that Pucher ran out of fuel on his last stop at the 40-minute mark which prevented him from challenging Nejc to the end. This allowed Njec to bring home the win two laps in front of Pucher and another four laps in front of Kandelhart in 3rd. Winning three out of four races Nejc also secured his 4th title in a row with Pucher in 2nd and Kandelhart in 3rd.

Schumacher Dart Cup Rd5 – Report

Round 5 of the Schumacher Dart Cup was held this past weekend at the RC Track facility, about 50km outside of Warsaw. The track offered a very smooth surface and a fast layout with a few technical jumps and the same cool bridge as in round 4. After a great fight between Bartek Kramza, Iwo Czarnecki and Bartek Gogacz, Bartek took the overall TQ in 2WD and 4WD. Unfortunately before the main finals it started to rain and the grip dropped to zero making the race even more exciting. In the opening 2WD final Bartek Kramza was able to fend off the constant attacks of Iwa Czarnecki and Wojtek Rzepecki for the win. In the second final Iwo Czarnecki dominated the race while in the final leg and after a hard fight with Iwo it was Bartek Kramza with the win and the overall from Iwo in 2nd.

Coelho finally gets his deserved World title

Having burst on to the scene at the 2014 Electric Touring Car World Championships in Florida finishing runner-up, then dominating the 2016 Worlds in China up until A2 and again finishing runner-up, Bruno Coelho is finally World Champion.  Widely acknowledged as the bench mark in touring car, the World title is the one to elude him but after a rocky start in South Africa it all came together for the Portuguese ace as he again found a way passed the defending champion to win A2 and the status of the No.1 driver in the World. Having found a way passed the Top Qualifier in A1 despite Volker’s best efforts to make his Yokomo wide, this time round Coelho set-up an impressive pass on his rival to go to the front after just 3-laps.  Unfortunately any chances of Volker recovering to force the decider to go to A3 evaporated a lap later as the Welkom RC Arena’s curbing claimed another victim, Volker.  In the end Volker would finish last with Viktor Wilck coming home second ahead of Freddy Sudhoff, all three now set to fight for the final two podium places in A3.
