The 2018 EFRA 1/10th Electric Buggy European Championship are held in Reims, France this week. On the FFVRC club’s slippery clay indoor track the 2WD portion of the event saw a great qualifying battle between Team Associated’s Joona Haatanen and Schumacher’s Michal Orlowski who would be trading TQs each of the first four qualifying rounds until Yokomo’s Lee Martin made himself only the third TQ driver with a win in round 5. However it was still Haatanen with the overall from Orlowski 2nd. Rob Sorjonen trifecta at WORS Rd4

The fourth round of this year’s WORS series was held in Nanaimo, BC. The track that was completely rebuilt only three weeks prior so only locals had a couple races on it with the surface being hard packed with slight bumps, large jump sections and off camber turns, making it a challenging layout than the average track in the series. In 1/10th 4WD Mod Buggy Rob Sorjonen would take the overall TQ and he would also come out fastest in Pro E-Buggy and E-Truggy. Rob then also went on to wrap up all three classes by A2 sealing up a solid weekend. With Paul Moria and Jason Mardon coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively in 1/10th 4WD Mod Buggy.

Joe Bornhorst takes maiden ROAR National title

This year’s ROAR 1/8th Electric Nationals race was held at the HobbyTown Hobbyplex indoor track in Omaha, Nebraska. Practice started on Thursday morning and with a little bit of a light turnout everyone was getting a lot of track time. Friday would be two seeding rounds and then two qualifiers and in 1/10th 4WD Short Course it was Tekno RC’s Joe Bornhorst with the overnight TQ following two round wins. Saturday saw four more qualifiers but Joe missed to get some runs together, allowing Tekno RC’s Ryan Lutz and TLR’s Tanner Denney score TQs. Going into the last round, basically whoever won would take overall TQ. Fortunately for Joe he had his head on straight and put a solid run together to take the round and overall TQ for the class. Sunday was main day and in A1 Joe brought home the win despite being chased by a storming Ryan Lutz. This time Lutz wanted to grab the lead early and went for a move but tagged Joe and spun him around. He waited and that handed Denney the lead, Joe 2nd and Lutz 3rd. Denney made a mistake a few laps later giving Bornhorst back the lead. Then he made another mistake a few laps later but was able to hold onto the lead with Lutz right behind him. Then Lutz made a couple mistakes allowing Joe to sneak away and bring home the A2 win and with it his first National Championship. Ryan Lutz would take the vice-championship from Tanner Denney 3rd.

Once again in Modified the battle between Olly Jefferies and Elliott Harper continued, with some super close and exciting racing, it is awesome to watch two of the best drivers in Europe battle it out at our races. Elliott took first blood in qualifying but Olly clawed it back to take TQ honours overall, followed by Elliott and Matt White. Olly managed to hold station by just 0.255 of a second over Elliott with Matt third. Olly pulled a little gap in the second final beating Elliott by two seconds with again Matt third.

The West Coast Buggy Nationals – Report

Last weekend San Diego RC Raceway set out to do something different in 1/10th scale electric RC racing. Racers were invited from around the country to attend the inaugural running of The West Coast Buggy Nationals which was hosted by SDRC Raceway. This event differed from others as there were no motor limits or minimum weights placed on any classes. It was separated simply by driver skill and which sponsors those drivers were representing. Three Divisions were offered at the West Coast Buggy Nationals; Sportsman, a Class for drivers who do not have any sponsors at all. Intermediate, a class for drivers who may be running for a tire or electronics company, and Expert, a class for those drivers representing a chassis sponsor or just wanting to run with the fast guys to see what they had to make it happen. Each Division was required to run both 2WD and 4WD buggy to be eligible to win the overall title for the Division they entered. SDRC also offered a beginner class where newer drivers could run a 2WD or 4WD buggy.

2018 Benelux+ Race – Report

The annual Benelux+ race took place this past weekend at the very fast track of the MAC de Baanbrekers club in Rucphen, The Netherlands. Due to the national holidays, the attendance was a bit lower than in recent years, but a total of 60 drivers were greeted by an excellent weather. The classes for this event were the usual suspects of Touring Stock, Touring Modified, and Formula, all ran according to the ETS rules, as well as Pro10. Everyone was really anxious to see the premier Modified class hit the track. Unfortunately some accidents marred this otherwise great event.
Hot favourite for the title was Awesomatix driver Olivier Bultyinck. Oli started his ambitions in fashion by claiming P1 in Q1. He had a gap of some 3 seconds on Sidney Blokker and Rick Van den Akker.
