Essex Winter Series Rd4 – Report

The penultimate round of the Essex Winter Series championship took place this weekend at the popular venue in South-East England. Despite the freezing temperatures outside, the fully heated hall and pits saw most racers resorting to t-shirts and the track groove up quickly. With Championship leader, and winner of all three events so far, Elliott Harper on international duty for Schumacher, others would be hoping to take advantage and a useful points haul from the day. Olly Jefferies would be the one to make the most of that – despite tough competition, the Xray driver went on to top all four of the qualifying rounds. However, behind Olly, tight battles for the remaining A-final places raged throughout each run. Infinity’s Andy Moore, running the Infinity prototype touring car for the first time in the UK, was Olly’s closest challenger in the opening qualifier, ahead of Olly’s Xray team mate Alexander Hagberg, the Team Associated cars of Chris Grainger and Alan Bickerstaff, and Kyle Branson, also running the new Infinity car.

Protoform WCICS Rd4 – Report

The Protoform Western Canadian Indoor Championship Series round 4 landed in the capital city of Edmonton, Alberta. Hosted by NASCAR, it was a very cold Winter weekend, perfect for indoor racing. Running on new black carpet, NASCAR took their track design to a completely different level, with a beautiful layout complete with green felt inserts. In the Touring Modified class top Western Canadian racer, Awesomatix’s Wayne Mah was in top form at his home club, and dominated the first two A-mains. Xray teammates Blake Bell and Danny Buck would each take a 2nd, and fellow Xray driver Luke Pittman would take 3rd both opening rounds. With Wayne’s place secured, and sitting out A3, Blake Bell would lock up 2nd overall, and Luke would take 2nd over top privateer Josh Carter to take the final podium spot. Danny Buck shown in podium picture but points were later corrected to Luke.

Cavalieri claims fourth Reedy Race win

Ryan Cavalieri has claimed a fourth Reedy Race of Champions title, the Team Associated driver winning the title showdown between himself and his great rival Ryan Maifield.  With the pair separated by a single point, Maifield having the advantage going into the 12th and final round of heads up racing, and the two Ryans lining up in the same race that would close the 23rd running of the legendary race the stage set for the ultimate showdown at the OCRC Raceway hosted event. With Cavalieri on pole and Maifield lining up directly behind him, the script was perfect but while Maifield would set chase on Cavalieri getting by the No. 2 starting Spencer Rivkin, the fairytale Yokomo debut was not to be. Struggling to keep up with Cavalieri, something obviously wrong with his car, Maifield would eventually go out with a front shock failure ending his quest for a second Reedy Race title.  With his only threat gone, Cavalieri could cruise to his 6th win of the event to win by a single point, yet another Reedy Race title.  While it was the seasoned package that won, the podium indicated an exciting season lies ahead as another of the new team debutants Ty Tessmann secured 3rd for Xray.

Reedy Race heading towards Ryan & Ryan showdown

The Reedy Race of Champions is heading towards a classic Ryan & Ryan showdown as the latest round of 2WD action produced a win each for Maifield and Cavalieri keeping the separation between the arch rivals at 1-point with two more rounds of racing left to decide the champion.  For defending champion Dakotah Phend, the round effectively ended his quest to become only the third driver to take back to back wins at the legendary event, as he ended up with an 8th in the race which was won by Ty Tessmann. Having shared the points lead at the end of 4WD, Tessmann survived needing to be marshalled to register his first 2WD win but it looks to have come too late for the new Xray signing to play a part in the title showdown.
