Matsukura tops free practice

Defending World Champion Naoto Matsukura has got his ambitions of winning a third consecutive 1:12 title off to an encouraging start by putting his Yokomo top of the free practice time sheets both in terms of outright lap time and total laps completed over 8-minutes.  Recording a fastest lap of 12.211 and 38-laps in 8:04.488 in the third of the four free practice rounds, the 18-year-old set the pace ahead of his Yokomo touring car team-mate Ronald Volker with Onpoint’s Jilles Groskamp and CRC’s Simo Ahoniemi the only other drivers to manage 38-laps of the indoor carpet track.

Matsukura confident of 3rd consecutive 1:12 title

Reigning 1:12 World Champion Naoto Matsukura says he is confident of securing a third consecutive title this week as the 16th running of the IFMAR 1:12 World Championships got underway in the sleepy Dutch town of Heemstede this morning.  Setting the fastest lap of the opening round of practice before contact with the boards resulted in a broken wheel bearing on his Yokomo, the young Japanese star is the pre-event favourite and should he pull off the feat will equal the achievement of legend of the sport Masami Hirosaka who had a run of success from 2000 to 2004.

Nick Joosens takes Belgian Nats Rd5 win

For the 5th round of the Belgian Electric Touring Championship they visited the track of the Baanbrekers in Rucphen in the south of Holland. The forecast for the weekend wasn’t looking that good with rain predicted for Saturday and a little better on Sunday. As everyone arrived on the Sunday morning, they were surprised to see sunshine and an almost dry track. In the Efra class qualification it was Nick Joosens who took TQ in front of Olivier Bultynck and Thomas Stockman. It was very close and those three guys running very similar lap times. All the drivers had a good start in the first final. Nick took the lead followed by Olivier and Thomas. For fourth place there was a battle between Geoffrey Vekemans, Rico Claeys, Nick Logie, Patrick Jongenelis and Nicolas Delise. After almost three minutes Ollie’s car had no more traction. The rear right driveshaft was broken. Nick cruised to the win and Thomas took second place with Patrick Jongenelis in third place.

Kyle Branson wins Rd5 of British 1/8th Nats

The fifth round of the 2012 national championship was a second visit to the Adur club, situated at Shoreham recreation ground to the west of Brighton. The original round 5 fixture was scheduled for the Halifax track but due to adverse weather conditions, the track was 1m under water due a local river bursting its banks for the second time within the last 4 years. Therefore with the previous round rescheduled for later on in the season, this race became the 5th meeting. With this race track being the smallest of all in the UK, it was a surprise to see 40 + drivers in attendance based upon previous meetings at this track. The Track is very technical with good rotation and turn in, the main criteria to produce quick and consistent lap times.

Cardoso & Miguel win Portuguese Cup

The Annual Portuguese Cup took place at the track of Maiorca last weekend, close to the city beach of Figueira da Foz in nice warm and sunny weather. The track has a very fast but non forgiving layout, you must always be focused and never lose speed. The stock class was a one man show, with Fernando Cardoso driving his Nosram powered Schumacher TQ’ing and winning the event with awesome driving and performance. In the modified class it was a totally different story. There were many good runs from all the drivers and in the last main 3 drivers still had the chance to take the overall race win. João Miguel Martinho with his Yokomo/LRP took a fine win, the result of error free driving.

JConcepts Summer Indoor Nationals report

The third stop of the JConcepts Indoor National series made the trip to Outback Raceway in Chico, CA. The facility, otherwise known as A-Main Hobbies, is a 1:10 scale racers’ paradise. The dirt surface is amazing, there is minimal tire wear, the layout was flowing and the traction was hooked up. Then to top if off, all of A-Main Hobbies’ massive inventory is available at the click of a mouse. Team Associated made the trip up north with Steven Hartson and Brent Thielke and was joined by Jason Ruona and Tanner Denney for JConcepts. In the 2011 edition of this race, NorCal local Eric Albano was just a privateer. Fast forward to 2012 and he’s now a Reedy Race Touring Car Open Class champion for Team Associated and with a year under his belt with off-road vehicles making consistent top regional a-main events. Not to be forgotten is a return to RC for Seattle native, John Walentia.
