Wollanka wins A1

Martin Wollanka has won the opening 4WD A-Main of the Euro Offroad Series at the Nürburgring, the Xray driver benefiting from a second lap clash between Top Qualifier Lee Martin and Bruno Coelho.  Leading for the rest of the race the Austrian would back off over the closing laps but almost went too slow with HB’s David Ronnefalk catching and passing him two corners from home.  However it was Wollanka who came out of the final corner in the dash to the line to win.  Behind them Tom Cockerill, who started 7th would complete the Top 3 with Coelho and Martin coming home 6th and 8th respectively.

Martin gives new YZ-4 TQ at Nürburgring

Martin gives new YZ-4 TQ at Nürburgring

Lee Martin has given Yokomo’s new YZ-4 its first accolade by becoming 4WD Top Qualifier at the Euro Offroad Series season opener at the Nürburgring.  The reigning champion, who yesterday took victory in 2WD, claimed the honour of Top Qualifier when he backed up his Q3 TQ with another in the fourth & final round.  With the Xray pairing of Bruno Coelho and Martin Wollanka, who TQ’d Q1 & 2 respectively, going into the round in contention for pole, Coelho would make too many mistakes and end up only 12th fastest leaving him to line up 2nd on the grid.  Having had a difficult round 2 & 3, Wollanka would deliver a P4 time to secure the No.3 starting position ahead of Martin’s team-mate Marc Rheinard who claimed second in Q4.  Behind Rheinard, HB’s David Ronnefalk would surprise with a much needed P3 in the final qualifier which will see the Swede line up 6th on the grid behind Michal Orlowski.

Wollanka tops Q1 at Nürburgring

The opening 4WD qualifier at the Euro Offroad Series season opener at the Nürburgring threw up an unexpected TQ run from Xray’s Martin Wollanka, the Austrian topping the times ahead of yesterday’s 2WD winner Lee Martin.  Marc Rheinard would complete the Top 3 ahead of Michal Orlowski, the new European Champion having been on a TQ pace until a motor issue in the final 30-seconds.  There was drama before the top heat had even got underway as practice top seed Bruno Coelho pulled the side off his Xray during the warm-up.  Pulling a wheelie coming onto the main straight his XB4 would veer into the  wooden boards on the straight with a gap at race control resulting in the car being left with no right side suspension.

Orlowski wins opening EOS A-Main

Orlowski wins opening EOS A-Main

Michal Orlowski has won the first A-Main of the new season of the  Euro Offroad Series at the Nürburgring in a race that was determined by two key incidents.  The first of those came halfway into the 5-minute encounter when surprise Top Qualifier Bruno Coelho got a jump wrong while leading from Lee Martin.  With this allowing both Martin and the pursuing Orlowski to the front, the second incident would come 5-laps later when the pair would make contact with Martin coming off worst.  While Orlowski initially waited, Race Director Scotty Ernst gave the 14-year-old permission to race on, a decision Martin was less than happy with.  With Coelho retiring after popping a camber link, Marc Rheinard would complete the Top 3 from 6th on the grid.
