DJ Apolaro wins 200mm at Copa Mitad Del Mundo

The Copa Mitad Del Mundo nitro on-road race for 200mm Sedans and 1/8th GT cars was run in the Quito area, Ecuador. The track is located roughly 3000 metres above sea level and the race saw entries from many South American countries including Brazil, Peru, Chile, USA and Ecuador of course. Friday’s practice was washed away by the rain largely but come Saturday the weather improved and the competitors were able to start working on their engines and chassis setups. The race format had direct qualifying for the top 4 so everyone was eager to qualify as good as possible. Capricorn’s DJ Apolaro was invited to compete in the Sedan class and soon learned that engine setup in the thin air was crucial. Nevertheless he ended up in third place after the qualifiers.

Cody King wins Pro Buggy at JBRL Nitro Rd4

Cody King wins Pro Buggy at JBRL Nitro Rd4

The JBRL Nitro Round 4 was held last weekend in Temecula, California at ARC Raceway. Cody King and Reds Racing new Team driver Cody Smith went 1st and 3rd in the buggy class. During the final, Cody King filled up with fuel at 10 1/2 minutes. It was not an easy race, because he had to fight with Adam Drake for the win. With about 5 minutes left in the 20 minute main Adam had a couple mistakes and allowed Cody to stretch out a bit. This would give him about a 6 second lead and he could cruise home to the win. Cody was really pumped on the fuel economy, as he was consistently well over 10 minutes on a tank, and with fuel to spare. This was at race pace with a lot of wheel spin and a lot of throttle input.

In Control?

In Control?

Whichever class you focus on, it seems that one of the key talking points throughout the past two years has been tires.  In the on-road nitro classes, that discussion has largely been focused on tire additive.  For many years, the cars ran without additive being used on the foam rubber the 1/8th and 1/10th cars run on – but in recent years people began to realise the advantage the correct additive and application could provide. This dark art began to put people off racing in these classes, and races tried to find ways to prevent additive being used.  But with additive difficult to detect and police, many realised the only way to police its use effectively was to allow it to be used.
