Harker & Borneill win at PDX Open

The 2019 PDX Open was held at PDX RC Underground in Portland, Oregon recently. The PDX Open originated to settle the local debate on whether Mod cars were in fact faster over a five minute run than their 17.5 counterparts. The small track has seen comparable lap times between the Mod and Stock classes and many argued the more manageable power of the 17.5 and 13.5 classes provided an advantage. Travis Harker (Xray) set out to show that with proper throttle control and patience navigating the track and traffic, mod power not only provides more fun but faster lap times. He ran a 6.5T motor in 2WD and a 5.5T motor in the 4WD class. After 2 rounds of qualifying he was able to put in clean runs in both classes to start on the pole in both mains.

2019 SBS 1/10 EP Malaysian Major League Rd2 – Report

The second round of the SBS 1/10 EP Malaysian Major League was held at the SBS track in Sungai Buloh, Malaysia recently. Round 2 was run on a full astroturf surface for the first time and most racers found that the high traction surface was easy to drive on but not easy to be quick. Most spent days before the race trying out different tires and shock setups while at the same time learning to drive on such a high grip surface, which is a rarity in this part of the world. This round saw also drivers from the UK and also Indonesia who travelled for the sole purpose of racing. With the aim to make the race day more interesting, this year’s format is a two-round qualifying heat with four rounds of mains per class. In 2WD Modified, it was Team Associated’s Bashir who took TQ and after a close fight during the finals, took the win in the tie-breaker. 2nd place went to Shahrin (Xray) with the 3rd place being taken by Yuri Taruna from Indonesia.

Hönigl & Kreil win at Austrian 1/10th Buggy opener

The opening round of the Austrian 1/10th Off-road Nationals was held at the GMAC Litschau club, one of the few real dirt tracks left in the country. The weather forecast looked terrible the week before the event, with even having the chance of snow on Sunday. Luckily things did not materialise with only one rain delay on Saturday afternoon. Racing on Sunday was held in very cold and slippery conditions, making things difficult for the drivers. In 2WD Buggy Xray’s Hupo Hönigl could secure the TQ in front of AE’s Peter Pinisch and Xray’s Lucas Grainer. The finals were even closer and Pinisch, Grainer and Hönigl won one final each so in the end the best time made the difference, which Hönigl had in front of Grainer and Pinisch.

2019 Silver State – Report

The annual Silver State race was held at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas last weekend. Presented by The Dirt Racing crew, the race for sure is one of the best 1/8th experiences of the year. 2018 was the inaugural year that the South Point Hotel and Casino hosted the Silver State and now with a whole year to make think about changes and adjustments, this year’s event was even better. The new make-shift driver stand felt like a real driver stand, the 1/5th scale track turned into a practice track for guys to get more run time than just three five minute quals and to dial in their rides on a surface that was similar to the race track. The track layout is always going to be fun as Joey and Aaron have been doing this for nearly 20 years now and they just understand racing and what it takes to make a fun track that challenges all levels. The real magic of the Silver State race is the evolution of the track and track surface. With Nevada being a desert climate and the driest state in the US, it’s really hard to find good natural earth dirt to make a track. However, by using what they have, the sandy fine dirt never packs together for longevity and over the course of the weekend will break apart creating holes, craters, and broken jump faces making it extremely difficult to race on by the mains. Despite all this, this is what makes the Silver State so special as it really does test the racer’s ability to adapt and overcome.

2019 JConcepts Stock Nationals – Report

The JConcepts Stock Nationals were held at OC RC Raceway in Huntington Beach, California last weekend. Expert 2WD Buggy was the perfect race for Team Associated’s Kyle Layton as he set the TQ and ran away with the win in the 10-minute A-final. With his polished, smooth driving style and starting from pole, Kyle was going to be hard to beat. From the very first lap, he was maximum push and lead the way from tone to tone to take a very impressive win. Yokomo’s Jake Thayer also drove brilliantly and displayed his stock speed and finished 5 seconds back from Kyle for 2nd. Team Associated’s AJ Marasco delivered a terrific run to land himself 3rd on the podium, which is quite the feat since he hasn’t made the main at the JConcepts Stock Nationals prior.

Götzl sweeps rained-out Czech Buggy opener

The opening round of the Czech 1/8th Off-road National Series was held last Saturday at the Kolin track. The weekend started off with free practice on Friday. During Saturday morning’s qualifiers Xray’s Max Götzl showed a very strong pace, taking the overall TQ in both the Nitro and Electric Buggy classes. SWorkz’s Jiri Mara and Xray’s Jiri Benes came in 2nd and 3rd respectively in Nitro while Marek Schiller and Ales Bidovsky completed the E-Buggy top 3. Going towards the nitro finals it started to rain during the first semi final with the weather getting more and more worse. This left the organisers with no choice but to call it a day, meaning the Nitro overall results were taken from the qualifiers, handing Max the overall win from Jiri Mara and Jiri Benes.
