Vanessa Wende wins 7th annual Winter Race

The Spessart Race Park in Waldaschaff, Germany recently held their 7th annual Winter Race in snowy, icy conditions. The Winter weather with temperatures down to -9°C made for challenging racing conditions for drivers and machines and it was the Wende family that excelled with Marcus and Vanessa taking the top 2 positions after the qualifiers. Both then also won their respective semifinals with Marcus grabbing the pole position for the main final by one second from daughter Vanessa. After the 30-minute main final things looked a bit different up front as young Vanessa took the win from Marcus while Andreas Heublein completed an all-Xray podium lock-out.

Finnish Indoor Championship Series Rd3 – Report

Round three of the Finnish Winter Jumps Indoor Championship Series was held in Taipalsaari over the weekend. The carpet track’s layout was pretty technical with many tricky corners and jumps and with both Karri Salmela and Joona Haatanen absent from the event, it was almost too easy for multiple EOS A-finalist Joel Valander to dominate the both the 2WD and 4WD classes. In Saturday’s 2WD class Joel had a strong start as he TQ’d in every qualification round. The Xray driver continued with strong performances in all A-mains as runner-up, VRC Pro double World Champion Markku Honkanen could not quite challenge Joel.

Kaja Novotny doubles at Lestr Cup Rd4

The fourth round of the Lestr Cup was held this past weekend in Prague, Czech Republic. In the 2WD qualifiers Xray’s Kaja Novotny took a clean TQ by coming out fastest in all qualifiers ahead of the Xray trio of Mudra, Miksovsky and Gotzl. Q1 of 4WD saw Kaja struggling in the high-bite conditions which gave Milan Mudra the round TQ, however swift runs in Q2 and Q3 meant the overall top qualifying position for Kaja while Mudra and Gotzl lined up in second and third.
The 2WD A-mains saw Kaja in dominant form again and he came out on top by winning all three mains in style. Milan Mudra would end the say on the 2 spot from Max Gotzl in third.

Orlowski does double & ends Neumann DHI Cup reign

Michal Orlowski has pulled off the double at the DHI Cup presented by LRP. Having successfully defended his 2WD title earlier in the day, the Schumacher driver was also to bring an end to 5-time unbeaten Champion Joern Neumann’s reign by winning 4WD. Unlike his 2WD win which he took with ease, 4WD was to prove a much more exciting affair with David Ronnefalk ensuring it went to A3 when he forced an error from the Polish teenager in A2.  With Orlowski starting from the TQ, Ronnefalk and himself again ran nose to tail, the pair’s pace almost identical. Again Ronnefalk would get the mistake he needed but as Orlowski fought back he managed to push the Swede into an error and once back in front he didn’t put a wheel wrong to become only the second DHI Cup Offroad double winner. With Ronnefalk getting second, the podium would be completed by Neumann, a podium finisher for a sixth year in a row, a result many drivers would be happy to emulate even if it marked the end of his impressive streak. Having made the podium in 2WD on his first DHI Cup Offroad outing, Marc Rheinard would miss out in 4WD, finishing up fourth.

Boots & Ongaro get The Italian Job done

The 2017 edition of the annual The Italian Job Race was held at the IBR Padova track this past weekend. In the premier Pro Nitro Buggy class it was newly-signed Tekno driver, Alex Zanchettin who took the TQ from the TLR duo of Marco Baruffolo and Renaud Savoya. Elliott Boots and Riccardo Berton (both Kyosho) would complete the top five with Martin Wollanka (Xray), Robert Batlle (Mugen) and Lee Martin (Infinity) coming in sixth to eighth place. The 60 minute main final was then run without top qualifier Zanchettin who ran into issues before his semifinals and so the race for the win was on between Ongaro and Boots. Davide looked to hold the upper hand in the opening stages but fading shock absorbers would lead to several mistakes by Ongaro, allowing Boots to take the lead while Marco Baruffolo was able to take profit of Ongaro’s issues and so the TLR driver was able to take the second spot some 20 minutes from the end. Up front, Elliott Boots brought home the win with Marco Baruffolo in second and Davide Ongaro in third.
