F1 RCGP Round 5 report

F1 RCGP Round 5 report

The 5th round of the F1RCGP Championship was held recently at Pit In Stadium in Chiba. This round attracted Masayuki Mimura (former 1/8 GP national champion) from Hot Bodies with the brand new HPI Formula 10.The track being used was designed by RC legend Masami Hirosaka and father Masaaki. With no exceptions just as in round 1 and 3 the race started under heavy rain condition and drivers started to try different tires like glue spreaded sponge tires, rubber tires and tamiya tube tires. Apparently most of the drivers got experience from the previous round as most of the cars ran pretty well under rain condition and the biggest issue seemed to be how to avoid water getting into your radio. The first casualty was David Tse running in the F1 class who was in a different league on a 17lap pace but stopped in lap10 with radio failure. All the heats finished under rain condition and Yoshitsugu Takahashi took pole position for the F1 class, while for F1GP class championship leader Hiroshi Kamibayashi (Alex Racing) led the first round with a 19 laps record and eventually took the pole position.

Moore tops fourth qualifier in Holland

Moore tops fourth qualifier in Holland

Factory Hot Bodies driver Andy Moore has ended Tamiya’s domination of qualifying here at the Dutch Euro Touring Series by taking the fourth and final qualifier on day 2 of the event. After difficult runs in the second and third rounds, the former World Champion had little choice but to use up his second set of qualifying tyres so as to ensure himself a place on the grid for tomorrow’s big race. Despite a half spin on his second lap the new Sweep rubber allowed the Hot Bodies driver to take control and record a time of 19 laps in 5:05.48, the third fastest run of the day. In the same predicament as the British driver, Xray’s Bart Wubben was also forced to run his second set of tyres but this time, his first run on new tyres failing to net a good time, the Dutch National Champion managed a strong second place to put himself in strong contention for a place in tomorrow’s A Main.

Jilles Groskamp

Factory Tamiya team-mates Marc Rheinard and Jilles Groskamp are topping the lap times here in Apeldoorn with the pairing seperated by just 1/100th of a second.  Debuting his new ‘Marc Rheinard’ outdoor tyre additive this weekend, Rheinard set a fastest lap time of 15.76 with Groskamp posting 15.77.  Having run old tyres in the morning Groskamp ran new tyres this afternoon and says his TRF416 was ’super good’.  The Dutch driver has also found a good set-up which allows him to run good times on his second outing with the controlled Sweep tyre.

Ronald Volker wins Reedy ROC

Ronald Volker wins Reedy ROC

Last weekend saw the 2009 running of the annual Reedy Race of Champions, held once again at Speedworld Raceway & Hobbies in Roseville, California. This years event was lacking some international stars, who due to various reasons couldnt make it, however there were some Europeans in action as well as the best that the US has to offer. Due to the reduced numbers, the usual Reedy format for the invitational class had to be tweaked and so qualifying was based on 2 best runs from 4, with the top 21 going into the invitational class event where the 2 best runs from 4 would decide the winner. Following the qualifying sessions, it was new Yokomo signing Ronald Volker from Germany, in his first race with the car, that would take the TQ spot ahead of Xray star Paul Lemieux. Sunday’s 4 races would see some close racing but it was both Ronald Volker and Finand’s Juho Levanan who would be battling it out for the overall win going into the final run of the day. Both drivers managed to take a win, but with both drivers having 2 wins after 2 dropped runs the decider would go the way of qualifying, and so it would be Volker that emerged on top, with Juho taking 2nd, and Associated team mate Rick Hohwart on the final podium spot in 3rd.
