Wilck becomes only the 4th multiple Reedy Race Champion

Viktor Wilck is the 2019 Reedy Race Champion, the Infinity driver becoming only the 4th multiple winning of the legendary race on this its 22nd running. Having conceded defeat to overnight points leader Ronald Volker as the final day’s action was widely expected to be rained out, a dry but cold & windy morning presented the 2012 champion with an opportunity to resume battle with Volker. With 2019 a new chapter in the history of the race following the demise of the famous Tamiya Track, conditions at new Steel City RC Speedway for the final two rounds of heads up racing were less than ideal with traction at a premium. It was a dramatic start to the morning as going head to head from the front row Wilck and Volker made contact in the penultimate round resulting in both cars breaking. One race to go and 1-point separated the pair. As the grid were published for the showdown, they would race in the same heat but the grid was somewhat controversial as Wilck was on pole and Volker lined up 11th. Up front Wilck, who was fastest throughout the event, pulled clear for an easy win while Volker worked his way through to second. This left them tied on points with the same number of wins, 2nd and 3rd places so it came down to the total time of their best three results which thanks to the only 21-lap run of the event in Round 10 gave Wilck his second Reedy Race of Champions title. Having come into the weekend chasing title No.8, Marc Rheinard would complete the podium in Fontana well clear of team-mate Akio Sobue in fourth.

Martin Bayer successful at IFMAR Buggy Worlds Warm-up

Last weekend’s warm-up race to the 2019 IFMAR 1/10th Off-road World Championships, held at the Hudy Racing Arena in Slovakia, saw Xray’s Martin Bayer taking the win in the 4WD class. The 4WD action started on Saturday right after the 2WD finals. Team Associated’s Joona Haatanen was setting the early pace in free practice, however in the timed practice, three drivers – Bayer, Haatanen, and Rivkin – were able to place times below the magical 1:10 minutes barrier with Martin Bayer being the fastest of the three. Joona Haatanen started strong again into the qualifiers by taking Q1. Q2 and Q3 then went to Martin Bayer. Schumacher’s Michal Orlowski took Q4 and Xray’s Daniel Kobbevik set the pace in Q5. So when the dust had settled it was Martin Bayer ahead of Joona Haatanen and Bruno Coelho. Things then gained further traction in the finals with a lot of track action going on. In A1 it was Martin Bayer who took the win. In A2 it was great battle between Xray’s Bruno Coelho and Martin Bayer for the win but Bruno would hold the upper hand. This meant three drivers would be going into A3 who could possibly take the overall – Bayer, Coelho, Kobbevik. Ultimately Martin Bayer laid down a great run and claimed the overall win on home soil followed by Coelho and Kobbevik.

Volker & Wilck eliminate one another in penultimate Reedy Race encounter

It was a dramatic start to the final day of action at the 22nd running of the Reedy Race of Champions as title rivals Ronald Volker and Viktor Wilck went head to head from the front row because a clash while battling over the lead eliminated both drivers on the spot. With the expected overnight rain staying at bay, drivers arrived to a dry but cold and windy track making for difficult conditions with traction at an all time low.  Winning each of their final encounters yesterday meaning they would be gridded in the same heat, it was Volker on pole with Wilck alongside.  Initially it was Volker who had the better start, Wilck making a number of mistakes over the opening laps but soon he was in his groove and quickly back on the rear bumper of Volker.  With 5-laps to go it looked like Wilck had found a way through in the front chicane but a slide saw Volker’s Yokomo shoot across into the side of the Infinity driver with both cars spinning off into the barriers before Volker’s car was collected by Akio Sobue.  Both cars broken, they were both out and with one race remaining it is all to play for in Round 12 as Volker holds onto a 1-point lead over his rival.  With the two drivers out Meen Vejrak took the win while the other encounter saw outgoing champion Marc Rheinard cement his podium finish with his 3rd win of the event.

Coelho wins 2WD at 1/10th Off-road Worlds Warm-up

The warm-up race for the 2019 IFMAR 1/10th Off-road World Championships was held at the Hudy Racing Arena in Trencin, Slovakia this past weekend. Held on the facility’s tricky dirt indoor track the race saw the running of the 2WD Buggy class first, with practice, timed practice and the qualifiers scheduled for Friday. Xray’s Martin Bayer took the timed practice, however in the qualifiers it was Xray’s Bruno Coelho who was able to take the overall TQ in front of Martin Bayer and Daniel Kobbevik (Xray). Team Associated’s young gun, Joona Haatanen was showing a good pace during qualifications and was able to take Q3. Going into the finals on Saturday, Bruno was the man to beat but Bruno held his starting position and after taking A1 and A2 he secured the overall win early. Martin Bayer finished 2nd and Joona Haatanen came in 3rd. Team Associated’s Spencer Rivkin and Dustin Evens were able to move up a bit and finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Volker & Wilck match each other with 10th round wins

The tenth round of racing at the Reedy Race of Champion saw title rivals Ronald Volker and Viktor Wilck match each other as they both came through the field of their respective heats to add another race win.  Separated by 1-point going into the final round of Day 2’s action at Steel City RC Speedway that is how the gap remains in the overnight standings with 2 rounds to go but whether they go ahead is in the hands of mother nature.  With the general conscious from various weather apps being that no racing will happen tomorrow due to forecast overnight rain, should that be the case Volker will be crowned Reedy Race Champion for a fourth time but if racers wake up to dry conditions in Fontana tomorrow morning its all to play for for Wilck. While Volker is sure to be doing his best rain dance and Wilck wishing for a dry day, for defending champion Marc Rheinard which ever way it swings he is set to give up his title with 3rd place on the podium.
