Practice finally gets underway at Worlds

Practice finally gets underway at Worlds

After a 7-hour delay in order to allow the track to dry after heavy rain two days ago, the 15th 1:10 Electric Offroad World Championships finally got underway at Silver Dollar R/C Raceway in Chico, California, with the track coming in for a positive reaction from drivers.  While the opening of the seven practice rounds that make up the Day 1 schedule was very much a track cleaning exercise, it was HB’s Ty Tessman who posted the fastest run time while in terms of outright pace its was TLR’s Darren Bloomfield who set the bench mark with a 29.350.  For reigning Champion Ryan Cavalieri it was not a great start to his title defense as he suffered a rear suspension arm failure early in his run.

‘From Race Control’ – Day 1 of EP Buggy Worlds

'From Race Control' - Day 1 of EP Buggy Worlds

UPDATE (10:30 local time) – Due to the track having not fully dried the start has been now put back a further 2-hours to 13:00 local time.  We have been informed too by Masami that a recommendation has been made that timed practice be determined over 2-consecutive laps as the lap times are expected to be in excess of 30-secs.  The second delay to the start of the event means Day 1 will run under flood lighting so as to allow them get fully through the already reduced 7 rounds of practice.

—————————————————————

New to our event coverage we will post a short update under the heading ‘From Race Control’ at the start of each day giving a short run down of what lies ahead for the drivers.  Today is the first day of action at the 15th IFMAR 1:10 Electric Offroad World Championships here in Chico, California with seven 5-minute practice rounds on the schedule, down from the 10 rounds originally planned.  Due to heavy rain two days ago which resulted in the Silver Dollar RC Raceway track surface requiring to be repaired and sugar treated, the start of the first day of 2WD action has been delayed until 11:00am local time to allow the track to dry.

Kerswell wins at Chesterfield Summer Shootout Rd4

Kerswell wins at Chesterfield Summer Shootout Rd4

This weekend saw the 4th and final round of the Chesterfield Summer Shootout Championship, probably the most competitive 12th scale summer championship in the UK with many of the top national drivers competing.
With the national championship starting next month almost all of the UK’s top drivers were in attendance to do some final pre-national testing. After 4 rounds of qualifying Chris Kerswell ended up in pole position, over a lap up on 2nd place, David Spashett. Moving into the final it was clear David would try to pass on the first few laps to try to prevent a gap appearing.  As it unfolded he couldn’t get close enough to make a move and that allowed Chris to pull away and maintain a gap of approximately half a lap to second place. At the end Chris won the A main in front of Daniel Holmes and Mark Stiles. David Spashett came in fourth with Luke Burley completing the top 5.

Sabah Reunion Race 2013 – Report

Sabah Reunion Race 2013 – Report

Sandakan Speedway played host for the 2013 Sabah Reunion Race. Racers from all over Borneo competed on the demanding track with a 50 metres straight and a very technical infield section. The race was held in a 13.5T touring, Formula 1 and nitro touring car class with the qualifying being held over two days. After five rounds of very tight qualifying, over a half of the 13.5T field had the 13 laps needed to be in the A-main. KS Chu held the top spot with the entire rest of the field being in a 16 seconds window. James Chong set the fastest lap to claim the pole in F1 and Hon Nyen Ho TQ’d the field of the nitro class. The Formula 1 drivers ran their 20 minute A-main first. They were the first cars on the track after rain disrupted the F1 and nitro qualifying and the rear wheel driven cars obviously had their problems. There was no clear favourite until the dry line started to form with Raphael using the opportunity to take the win. The nitro touring class could not run their full 20 minutes with darkness rapidly approaching. In a final shortened to 10 minutes Hon was able to convert his pole into a victory. In the electric touring car class the close qualifying meant close racing in the final. The still damp track was only a problem for the first round. When the dust settled the three final legs had three different winners winners and after the tie-break that had the fastest lap taken into consideration KS Chu claimed the overall by 9/1000 of a second.

Roy Gjemble sweeps Norwegian 1/10th off-road nats

The 2013 installment of the Norwegian National Championship was hosted by the Innherred Rc-Bilkubb in Levanger, Norway. The IHRC Raceway is an astroturf covered, 230 meter long high-speed but technical track that again proved to be a real challenge for both drivers and cars. The same track and club is likely to be the venue and host of the 2014 Nordic Championships as well so it was a good opportunity for the racers to get some track time. The race format saw the 2WD class raced on Saturday and 4WD on Sunday. This year, for the first time in Norwegian electric buggy history, the 4WD class winner would be awarded what is considered the highest achievement in sports in Norway, His Majesty the Kings Trophy.
