Starting from 5th on the grid and with a DNF from the first round of 4WD to drop, the 18-year-old kept his nose clean at the start and helped by a pile up at the first run through the JConcepts kicker came out of the first lap with a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. Running in Race 2 of the final round, Ryan Maifield and Spencer Rivkin lining up in Race 3, the result sealed the title for Phend with the Michigan driver becoming the 16th name to be added to Mike Reedy Heritage Trophy.  With Maifield taking the win in the final race, Rivkin ending up fourth, the outgoing champion would secure second overall with Rivkin completing the podium.

Rivkin & Maifield clash, Phend right in contention

Rivkin & Maifield clash, Phend right in contention

The penultimate round of racing at the 22nd running of the Reedy Race of Champions produced fireworks at OCRC as Spencer Rivkin clashed with Ryan Maifield, the reigning champion coming off the worst.  The opening race of the fifth round of 4WD would see Maifield start 4th and Rivkin 8th with the pair going to the front when Dustin Evans had a rollover on the step down half way through the race. Running on his mentor’s rear wing for 5 laps, Rivkin would attempt an ambitious inside pass through the sweeper which he couldn’t execute.  Making contact with Maifield the incident was exacerbated when a delayed Maifield could connect with team-mate Dustin Evans over the following double sending Maifield tumbling.  With Rivkin coming out in front, Maifield would resume in fifth but with just three laps to recover could only salvage third behind JP Richards.  While Rivkin felt the second incident with Evans was Maifield’s undoing Maifield had a very different view saying ‘he (Rivkin) lost a friend in that deal’.  With Jared Tebo going on to claim his first 4WD win in Race 2 ahead of Kyle McBride, the significant result of the round would come in Race 3 with Dakotah Phend winning from 9th on the grid.  Describing it as a ‘very important’ result the win now puts the TLR driver in contention for the Reedy Race title with him equal on points with Rivkin when dropped scores are taken into account with Maifield one point behind them.

Rivkin opens final day at Reedy Race with win

Rivkin opens final day at Reedy Race with win

Spencer Rivkin has opened the final day of the Reedy Race of Champions in the best way possible with a win that puts the Associated driver one point clear of reigning champion Ryan Maifield with three races remaining.  The overnight leader, Maifield would salvage a third from his first race of the day, the win going to his TLR team-mate Dakotah Phend.  With a 10 point result to drop after his non-finish in the opening round of 4WD yesterday, Phend’s win puts the 18-year-old right in the mix as the round effectively ended a number of key player’s chances.  Leader of the event at the end of the 2WD action, former champion Dustin Evans had another tough round, finishing only 6th as he did in round 1, meaning he will have to count one of the 6th place finishes.  The other winner of the round was Steven Hartson, the AE driver’s second 4WD pulling him up the ranking.

Maifield leads at Reedy Race going into final day

Reigning Champion Ryan Maifield leads the way going into the final day of the Reedy Race of Champions tomorrow, the TLR driver ending Day 2’s action at OCRC Raceway with a second win in 4WD.  Starting Round 2 of 4WD from the front row of the grid alongside pole sitter Dakotah Phend, Maifield’s win gives him a 1-point advantage over his protege Spencer Rivkin.  Having won his opening race Rivkin backed that up with a second place behind Associated team-mate Kody Numedahl, Numedahl sitting 3rd in the points overnight.  In the other encounter, Steven Hartson took the win ahead of Ryan Cavalieri and Jared Tebo, Cavalieri sitting 4th tied with Tebo on 15 points.

Maifield, Rivkin & Martin win opening 4WD encounter

Maifield, Rivkin & Martin win opening 4WD encounter

The opening round of 4WD at the Reedy Race of Champions would produce wins for Ryan Maifield, Spencer Rivkin and Lee Martin but the big news of the round was the bad results for TLR’s Dustin Evans and Dakotah Phend.  First and second in the points at the end of 2WD and lining up in the same first 4WD encounter, Evans would struggle from 7th on the grid ending up only 6th while Phend, who was chasing down Rivkin for the race lead, who break on lap 6 at the same piece of track where he had a break in 2WD yesterday.  Opening the first of the six rounds of 4WD, Martin would take a tone to tone win over Ty Tessmann, both having started off the front row.  In the second race Maifield would somehow survive a roll on the straight to win ahead of Jared Tebo and long time race leader Brian Kinwald.  In Race 3 Rivkin had a good battle with Kyle McBride with Ryan Cavalieri looking to be getting into the mix from 8th on the grid until a mistake on the penultimate lap meant he had to settle for third.
