Essex Winter Series Rd1 – Report

The first round of the Essex Winter Series took place this weekend.  Another packed entry descended on the EWS venue in the south-east of England, to be greeted by a completely re-vamped track. Brand new ETS-style carpet was in use this year, expanding the track size to a massive 34×24 metres, and Sweep Racing were now on board as the presenting partner, with all drivers using the EWS-spec Sweep carpet tyre, and hand-out additive. This new combination, combined with an improved level of branding and presentation, impressed the drivers and left everyone keen to get their winter season off to a good start.

Munday & Zammit win at 2016 Coleman Cup

Munday & Zammit win at 2016 Coleman Cup

The Coleman Cup memorial race has been running since 1995 in honor of young racer Brendan Coleman, who had tragically passed away. The 2016 edition was recently held at the Melbourne Keilor Offroad RC Club, where over 80 entries raced for the prestigious trophies. The club worked hard to put on a good track; unfortunately, Mother Nature stepped in during the day, and her ever-increasing gale force winds forced the event to be cancelled on safety grounds after qualifying. 2WD Open saw Ray Munday taking the first place from Andrew Selvaggi second and Cameron Zammit third, making it an all Team Associated podium. 4WD Open saw a result identical to the Victorian Titles two weeks prior, with 15-year-old ‘Cam Zam’ in first place, Ray Munday in second, and 10-year-old Lachlan Munday in third, all driving Team Associated buggies. Cameron also took the Truck Open class while in the highly competitive 17.5T categories, 11-year-old Jordan Isergin continued his strong form with a first in 4WD 17.5T.

Bill Sydor wins Spec GT class at IIC 2016

Bill Sydor wins Spec GT class at IIC 2016

The recent International Indoor Championships in Las Vegas not only saw 1/12th scale and Touring Car racing but also the running of the popular Spec GT class. The category offered super close racing all week, thanks to having handout motor and speed control, as well as a FDR limit. In qualifying, Rod Canare would take the TQ spot, with Devin Patterson starting second and Bill Sydor starting third. In the main, a tap from Canare on the first lap would put him back in the pack, moving Patterson and Sydor to the top. Sydor would follow in Patterson’s shadow for a few laps, and on lap 8 Patterson made a small mistake on the curbing, allowing just enough space for Sydor to go through, giving him the lead which he would not relinquish.

Malin Karlsen wins OMK Fall Classic series Rd6

Malin Karlsen wins OMK Fall Classic series Rd6

Round six of the OMK 2WD Fall Classic series was held at the OMK raceway in cold but dry weather conditions. Malin Karlsen would lay down one of her usual performances to grab the overall TQ, putting in the only 15-lap runs of the evening. The opening A-main started with no problem but a lap counting problems brought things to a halt, meaning A1 had to be re-run. Early in the race Malin made a mistake by clipping a corner which send her dead last. After being marshalled she started to recover and soon found herself in third place from which she was able to put pressure on the second place driver that would eventually make a mistake to promote Malin into second place. After putting in a couple of fast laps Malin was right behind the leader at the start of the final lap and once the leader ran too wide in a corner Malin made maximum use of the invitation and she took the lead and with it the win in the opening A-main. A2 then was a pretty easy affair for the young lady. At the sound of the tone she jumped into the lead and never looked back to take the leg win, race win and with it the overall win in the championship with two rounds to go.
