2007 Snowbird Nationals – Update

Mike Dumas

Qualifying for the 2007 Snowbirds is now complete as is the bump up B-mains that sees the winner of the B-main take the final place in the A-mains. In Touring Pro Mod it was Mike Dumas that took the top qualifying spot driving for Team Losi finishing just ahead of Dutch driver Jilles Groskamp and Paul LeMieux in 3rd, both racing for Xray. Swedish driver Joel Myrberg, racing the Associated TC5 managed to bump up after a very tense fight in the B-main to take the number 10 spot in tomorrows A-main.

In Touring 19T Foam Travis Schreven took the pole away from Associated racer Juho Levanen with Pro Mod pole man Mike Dumas in 3rd for Team Losi. Chris Tosolini bumped up after a very close and fortunate run in the B-main to take the final starting position in tomorrows A-main. In 1/12th GTP modified it was German racer, and winner of last Decembers Swedish GP, Marc Fisher that took pole position from Mike Dumas, who once again shows his amazing consistency. Walter Henderson took the 3rd position and once more Chris Tosolini managed to bump up after another fortunate B-main in which he was knocked back into the field after a first lap incident.

2007 Snowbird Nationals – Qualifying

Snowbird Nationals

As everyone in RC already knows, the planets biggest RC race is taking place this week in Orlando Florida, the 13th Annual Snowbird Nationals. We have already covered some news from the event but until now haven’t covered the happenings at the track itself. Our site sponsors, The Border, are present at the track to support their team driver Jilles Groskamp, who is 2nd in Pro Mod qualifying after 3 rounds, before heading on to next weeks Winternats in Ft Myers and they have sent us some images.

In the image above you can see the new Serpent electric touring car, as driven in foam class by designer Rene Cornella, who while having troubles adapting to his first electric event is improving the cars set up, whilst Rafael Angula, who is running rubber, is just outside the top ten in both 19t and Stock. At the head of the field after 3 rounds it is Barry Baker driving for Xray that tops Pro Mod followed by Jilles and Paul LeMieux both also for Xray whilst in 19T it is LeMieux for Xray thats in front ahead of Japanese HB racer Atsushi Hara with Juho Levanen with the new Associated TC5 in 3rd.

Well now thanks to RC Tech member Skiddins, who was at the event with his video camera, we can now watch some of the action from the 4th round of the Championship. The video above is off the first final in the modified class and features World Champion Andy Moore.

Masao Tanaka signs to Motonica for 2007

Masao Tanaka signs to Motonica

Top Japanese racer and multiple World championship podium finisher, Masao Tanaka has been confirmed to race for Motonica for the 2007 season. Tanaka had previously tested the Motonica prior to last years 1/8th Nationals, but decided for the Mugen as he didn’t have time to learn the car, but obviously he liked the car enough to decide to race with it for the 2007 season. Tanaka has been out of a sponsored drive since Ninja motors were pushed upon Mugen team drivers last year which forced Tanaka to make a decision between staying with Mugen or with Kawahara where he works, who just happen to be the Novarossi importers for Japan, he chose to stay in employment. Whats also interesting is the close relationship now between Motonica and Novarossi, with suggestions that they are both pushing to build an all Italian dream team which could possibly include 7 time World Champion Lamberto Collari.

Andy Moore wins Carpet Wars World Cup

Andy Moore wins Vega Cup

World Champion Andy Moore has won this years Carpet Wars 2 Day World Cup, formerly known as the Vega Cup, held at the Black Lion Leisure complex in Gillingham. Andy managed to put his HB Cyclone on the pole position after qualifying, followed closely by Yokomo racer Chris Grainger who had struggled on this track previously, but managed to pull it together for the big event. In the main event Andy Moore won the first two finals with Chris taking two 3rd places heading into the last final.

Final three saw a train of cars behind Andy Moore as everyone circulated in grid order, the racing was close and then got a little to close for Chris as he tapped the back of Andy, the race director had no option but to give Chris a stop and go penalty, by the time Chris was back on track he was down the order and his result left him third over the three legs.

You can read the full race report here. You can also get the full report from round 4 of the Carpet Wars that took place the weekend previous here.

Spanish 1/18th cup, round 2

Spanish 1/18th cup

Xray are reporting on their site on the second round of the Spanish 1/18th cup which was held at the weekend in Parla, Madrid on a great purpose built outdoor mini scale track. Pedro Fuentes managed to take the win after a hard fought battle that took place during a very long 15 minute final.

The biggest battle was among the other drivers, especially Adrian Ortiz, J.A. de Lara and Pedro Fuentes. In the final 3 laps everything seemed to be decided, but then Gonzalo (who was getting ready to lap 2nd place again) ran out of batteries lost the race… very bad luck.

Manuel Huber, latest driver to race Xray NT1

Manuel Huber

Xray, never one to hold back, have signed yet another big European name, Manuel Huber, to race their new Xray NT1 200mm gas touring car. The multiple Austrian champion and WC/EC finalist will join the Slovakian team with immediate effect and will line up alongside Groskamp, Christensen, Peracho, LeMieux, Burch and Baker to make a formidable team.

The main reasons for my decision to move to Team XRAY are the independent self-production of every part of the car (the XRAY factory is really amazing!), the possibility for quick changes to different parts, and of course the really great teamwork. After driving the NT1, I found it is much faster than the car I was used to racing.

Elliot Harper wins British Indoor Winter Series

Elliot Harper with Andy Moore

Last weekend saw the final round of the 5 round British Indoor Winter Series, held once more at the Don Valley Stadium. After only qualifying 4th the Hot Bodies driver Elliot Harper had a tough battle with Xray racer Ben Cosgrave and eventually managed to pull out a gap and chase after the leader Guy Thornton who shortly after crashed out, allowing Harper to take the win in Modified class and the overall title.

However, half way down the straight the leaders car came to a stop – it was all I could do to miss both his car and the marshal attempting to retrieve it. I just squeezed under his foot as he stepped back! By then, I knew I had a clear run in for the remaining few laps to secure the win on the day. This is how the race closed and I was very relieved to finish the series on a high note!
