Patrick Fankhauser takes Swiss 200mm title

The fifth and final round of the Swiss IC Track Championship was held in Herblingen recently. In the 1/10th Nitro Touring class the championship was still open between Raphael Wicki and Patrick Fankhauser while the 1/8th Championship was already sealed by Simon Kurzbuch. To keep his title hopes alive, Patrick had to finish in the top 3 and at least two spots in front of Raphael. During the qualifiers, Patrick struggled a but with his car’s setup, however this was sorted out for the finals and he could win his semi with a 2-laps margin. Due to the high tyre wear, Patrick opted for a high-pace strategy with a full stop for tyres in the finals that were at first lead by Thilo Tödtmann until he ran into radio issues that would cost him the win. After the mid-race tyre change, Patrick found himself on P6 while Raphael was on P3. With fresh tyres however Patrick was able to go a higher pace and he soon closed in on the top drivers. At the 25-minute mark, Patrick was already in P4 and while Raphael was on a different tyre strategy, Patrick was able to get past while Wicki ran out of tyres that would also cost him another position to Niclas Scherrer. In the end it was Marco Rizzo with the win from Simon Kurzbuch as Patrick Fankhauser took the 3rd place and with it the overall championship title in front of Raphael Wicki, Marco Rizzo and Traugott Schär.

Nuno Duraes takes Portuguese 200mm title

The ARMAIA track played host to round 5 of the Portuguese IC Track Nationals this past weekend. In the 200mm class it was Carlos Manuel Rodrigues who set the pace as he took the overall TQ after winning the second, third and fourth qualifying round from Q1 winner, Nuno Duraes. After the semifinals however it was Nuno with the pole position for the 30-minutes long A-main, but due to clutch issues Duraes had to ask for a time out, meaning he had to start dead last. By the first round of pitstops Nuno had already recovered to 2nd thanks to a brilliant start and he started to chase Carlos Manuel for the lead. In the closing stages Nuno ran out of tyres and it looked like Carlos would bring home the win but a mistake of Carlos during the final fuel stop meant Nuno would be able to take the win with a narrow 1-lap margin from Tomas Andrade while Carlos Manuel had to settle for 3rd overall. Thanks to the win, Nuno was awarded with the 2018 National Champion title.

Hoppe & Kröger win at German 1/8th IC Track Nats

This past weekend the German 1/8th IC Track Nationals were held at the Minidrom Ettlingen track in the South of the country. The crowd saw an exciting Class 1 final as it was a close battle for the victory between Lars Hoppe and Oliver Mack from the beginning of the race. Due to different fuel and tyre strategies the lead swapped numerous time during the final. Lars opted to change only the outside tyres at the third pitstop while Oliver changed all four tyres about mid-race. Before the final round of pitstops Oliver took over the lead with fresher tyres but Lars stayed behind closely. Lars entered the pits for his last stop first and a super fast pitstop of Thilo Tödtmann put some pressure on team Mack. A few laps later Oliver had his last pitstop and he returned to the track just behind Lars. For the final laps the distance was only a few meters but Lars put his head down and crossed the finishing line in first position to take his maiden German Championship title with Oliver Mack coming in 2nd and Merlin Depta rounding out the podium. In the Class 2 it was young David Kröger with a great drive in the final after winning the semi-final with a gap of four laps over the rest of the field. A small mistake in the first lap of the main final dropped him to the last position but for the rest of the race he showed a flawless performance. A few minutes before the end of the race David took over the lead and never looked back to take the German Championship title Class 2 as well as the Junior Champion title.
