ENS heads to home of German Grand Prix

ENS heads to home of German Grand Prix

This weekend (13-15 June) the Euro Nitro Series will take competitors to the home of the German Formula One Grand Prix with Round 3 of the all new onroad nitro championship taking place at the famous Hockenheimring. The only temporary track on the inaugural four race calendar, the venue has played a key role in the creation of the ENS which so far this season has produced 4 different Top Qualifiers and four different race winners. Offering up its annual ‘European Nitro Challenge’ event to be part of the ‘Pilot Series’ run by the ENS organisers last year, it was the success of this that lead to the creation of a full championship for 2014.

No surprises in Luxembourg as Volker takes Q1

fri_volker6

The top of the time sheets for the opening qualifier of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Luxembourg contained no surprises as Ronald Volker capped off a perfect opening day to Round 5 of the championship with a TQ run.  The Yokomo driver, who is very much on target to secure a fourth consecutive ETS title this weekend, outpaced his rivals by over 2-seconds, the second fastest time being set by Tamiya’s Marc Rheinard with the only remaining title challenger Alexander Hagberg managing only 7th in the first of the four qualifiers.  Completing the top 3, only just, was VBC Racing’s Lucas Urbain who was 0.002 faster than fellow Frenchman  Loic Jasmin.  The qualifier saw a number of key non-finishers with Jilles Groskamp, Yannic Prumper, Marc Fischer and Andy Moore all having issues.

World Champion returns as ETS makes first visit to Luxembourg

World Champion returns as ETS makes first visit to Luxembourg

In contrast to the tight boards style track of Round 4 held at the fahr(T)raum Museum in Mattsee, Austria, the Yokomo Euro Touring Series travels for the first time to Luxembourg this weekend (6-8th June) to what is rated by many drivers as one of the greatest outdoor tracks in Europe – Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg”. The penultimate round of the championship, the event marks the return of former champion Jilles Groskamp, the reigning World Champion having some great memories of the track as it was where the Tamiya Racing Factory driver won his first major title back in 2009. Another significant name on the 240 plus entry list is that of r/c racing legend David Spashett who despite many years of being involved in the championship as a sponsor will make his first race outing. Amassing an impressive 4 World Championship titles and 13 European crowns, Spashett will go up against the biggest current day names of the sport including Groskamp having entered the Ride Modified class in which he will be driving an ARC R10.

Hagberg to bolster Xray entry at ENS Hockenheim

Hagberg to bolster Xray entry at ENS Hockenheim

Having taken their first win of the Euro Nitro Series at Round 2 of the all new nitro onroad championship last month in Austria, Team Xray are to bolster their factory team line-up for Round 3 at Hockenheim in Germany in two weeks (13-15 June). Taking his RX8 to victory in the 1:8 A-Main in Aigen, Dutch ace John Ermen will be joined by Alexander Hagberg as the Slovakian manufacturer looks to also take a first 1:10th ENS victory. While Xray are one of the main sponsors of the ENS, other racing commitments have prevented Hagberg from attending since his participation in the second of last year’s ENS Pilot Races in which the Swede finished 4th.

The New Generation (Part I)

The New Generation (Part I)

It’s a topic that’s often discussed and bought up, and something I’ve alluded to in a number of my previous columns. But I thought it was finally time to dedicate a whole piece to the subject. In fact, so much so that I know I’ll need to split this out into a couple of parts! How do we get more youngsters involved in our sport?

On the Grapevine – Austria

Grapevine Austria

Over the last month my work commute became a bit regular, well regular in terms of the destination country as I made three consecutive trips to Austria. The first of these was for the season finale of the Euro Offroad Series which thanks to a change to the weekend schedule would turn out to be the first time in the championships’ 11 races that on a Sunday evening as I did my final wrap up that I made the comment ‘I enjoyed that’. From there it was ETS action that brought me back to Austria, this time to a small town called Mattsee. In my time as Events Editor of Red RC I have got to meet many great people around the world but on that weekend I would get to meet someone who a few years ago as a huge motoring fan I would never have expected to meet let alone be invited to have dinner with. While appreciative of its picturesque countryside and enjoying every second of driving on its twisty mountain roads my Austrian ‘tour’ would unfortunately end on a very damp note as the rain did everything in its power to try and prevent the running of the second round of the new Euro Nitro Series.
